Energy Storage Solutions for an Intelligent Future, David Surplus, Introduction

  1. 1. SENSE Energy Storage Solutions for an Intelligent Future By David Surplus Chairman Matrix SEHP 22nd November 2013
  2. 2. SENSE Welcome Session One The International and Regional Strategic Nature of Energy Storage Session Two How can NI Maximise Opportunities in Intelligent Energy and Energy Storage? But first, a look at the emerging energy storage / intelligent energy landscape in NI.....
  3. 3. • DETI Minister Arlene Foster has launched MATRIX Sustainable Energy market foresight report • Identified Intelligent Energy Systems as a highly attractive future global market for NI industry • Recommends increased use of interconnection, energy storage and demand side management • A dedicated delivery vehicle being formed to grasp first mover advantage and secure exports • NI would become an “early adopter” commercial reference site for intelligent energy systems • Delivery vehicle will be an essential enabler if NI is to strongly bid for future funding, such as... • Horizon 2020 and Energy Systems Catapult – an industry led research centre SENSE • Formed by emerging energy storage supply chain companies and pro-active end users... • to identify how suitable energy storage technologies can be used to solve transitional electrical system problems • Initial storage vector focus on batteries, Isothermal Compressed Air and H2/NH3 production through electrolysis • Initial market application focus on wind farms, micro-grids, large consumers and existing system support. • High priority on demonstration projects LECALE DSU • Forming soon to develop NI’s first micro-grid • Community involvement through DDFFRE • Centred on Bishopscourt former RAF base • Using SEM model for Demand Side Units • Aiming to be self-sufficient in electricity • Aiming to be a net exporter of electricity • Approximately 70 more micro-grids in NI • Use of wind, solar PV, AD, tidal and NH3 • Shared micro-grid benefits to reduce the need for ROCs on individual generators • 300 houses + EVs as a captive customer base • New 33kV substation + Energy Storage Park
