  • The Internet & The Church
    • 20% of people look online to find a Church to attend
    • 64% of wired Americans use the Internet to find Spiritual information.
    • Google Zeitgeist has stated that the #1 Google search question for 2007 was
    • “ Who is God?”
    • Internet Safety is required by Virginia Law to teach in K-12 grade. Be prepared as a classroom teacher to incorporate internet safety into your curriculum.

  • Internet and the Church
    • 83% of Church members say email has helped with communication and spiritual direction
    • 81% get information about a Church service from a website
    • Free Bible translation websites, sermons online, animated Bible games, free religious podcasts, daily devotions, projecting Worship Songs in Church and millions of free Bible resources for helping us better understand the Bible, our lives and God.
  • Technology has benefited Christianity

    • Jesus Film in over 100 languages on More than 200 million people have accepted Christ as a result.

  • Downsides of Internet
    • Cyberbullying
    • Phishing (Stealing of your credit card and bank information)
    • Illegal music and movies downloaded
    • Pornography
    • Posting pictures and information online on My Space, Facebook or websites cost people their job
  • Cyberbullying
    • 1/3 of kids online are cyberbullied. Kids feel like they can say anything online with no consequences.
    • Anything posted online is permanent. Any chat, email, and website can be recovered so BE AWARE!
    • If you’re bullied, tell an adult right away
    • 100,000 students drop out of schools due to bullying every year
    • Consequences of bullying
      • Arrested, Kicked out of school, No job as a result of words posted years ago on web, and Loss of friends

    • If a song or movie can be bought in a store, than downloading it for FREE is illegal.
    • Limewire, BitTorrent, BearShare, KaZaa, Morpheus and other file sharing software are almost 100% illegal because people download songs and movies without paying for them.
    • Penalties if caught are 5 years in prison and $2500 in fines.
    • As of July 2006, 20,000 people sued for illegal downloading
  • Guidelines
    • It is legal to borrow a CD or movie to listen to or watch
    • However, you can’t make a copy for yourself. You didn’t pay for it!
    • You can make a burned CD/DVD of your favorite songs and movie clips as long as you use your own CDs and Movies.
  • How can I get my Music or Movies?
    • There are several websites that you can use to get your movies or music:
    • has songs for 99 cents & has songs for 89 cents
    • rent a movie from 49 cents to $3.99
    • Itunes also sells TV shows and movies
  • Internet Predators & Pornography
    • Pornography is the #1 best money making business on the Internet. It is a $4-$10 billion dollar industry.
    • As a result, the company is sneaky about targeting kids. Here are some of the techniques they use:
      • 1. The Pornography companies target kids by putting provocative ads on gaming websites
      • 2. They install spyware and Adware that you get when you go to gaming or Free ad-supported websites. The spyware then begins to put ads on your computer screen which can have porn.
      • 3. When a company stops paying for a website, the Porn Industry will buy that website hoping you had a link to it or visit it by mistake. This happened to one teacher who had a good writing website for 4th grade.
      • 4. Some other tactics are changing the home page or installing sex software on your computer without your permission or knowledge.
  • Internet Predators & Pornography
    • 70% of sexual advances occur on the Web
    • 1 in 4 kids between 10-17 have been propositioned for cybersex
    • 21% of kids say they have looked at things they wouldn’t want their parents to know
    • 11 is the average age that users first view porn on the web.

    • You need to protect your computer from Pornography, spyware, and viruses. Virus protection stops viruses from ruining your computer. This is a MUST!

        • Spyware or Malware has become as bad as viruses. T he #1 way to speed up 90% of the Windows computers is to remove the spyware.
        • Most people get Malware because they downloaded free software, games, or went to gaming websites. Although you can get it from just surfing the Internet too. Free comes with a cost!
        • Porn websites are known for installing lots of Spyware that can cause popup windows on your computer even if you aren’t on the web!

    • Monitor your child’s Internet
    • Discuss Social Websites like MySpace and Facebook
    • Never post personal information
    • Talk to your kids
    • 1.Talk to your child and set clear guidelines for Internet use.
      • Chat and email only with friends
      • Discuss what websites, times allowed on computer and computer in public place
      • Only post information and pictures you don’t mind anyone including your parents seeing
      • Never share personal information such as your age, address or phone number online
      • Never email bank or credit card information or send that information through a chat
      • Realize that everything that is posted online is permanent . Even if you delete the web page it is NEVER deleted-it can still be viewed online through services such as

    • Use software to keep your child safe . This is not meant to be for snopping but for using for teaching moments.

      • Limit who can see your web page. Only allow your friends
      • Post only appropriate pictures and information . I know of one person who lost a job offer just because of a provocative picture posted on My Space years ago.

    • Have your students use a pretend name on the Web. This protects your identity online
    • Never share personal information such as:
    • Address
    • Phone Number
    • Social Security
    • Age
    • Talk about posting photos online . Make sure only friends can see your photos or they are password protected. There have been cases of students pictures had been modified by predators online to be sexual.
    • Predators can use personal information posted online
    • and track you down in 30 minutes or less!
  • #5 Talk to your kids
    • Talk to your kids about whom they chat with, websites they visit, and general computer experience.
    • Remind them to tell you about pictures, emails, or chats that make you feel uncomfortable.
      • Delete bad emails. You can prevent most sexy emails by limiting who can email you .
      • Forward junk emails to [email_address] It is illegal to send SPAM in Virginia.
      • Don’t invite or respond to people in chats or chat rooms that are strangers or that make you uncomfortable.
  • Internet Safety Tips
    • The email and IM username should not be your child’s name or have personal information
    • Passwords should be letters and numbers at least 8 characters
    • Don’t sign up or register for free or prize websites. Most of these websites just want your personal information and email so they can send you JUNK emails
    • Create 2 email accounts. 1 for friends and family and 1 for when you sign up for websites and software. This is your junk mail email.
