  • Network industry is undergoing a paradigm shift similar to the server industry about twenty years ago – we are moving from traditional proprietary, vertically integrated ‘single vendor’ stacks with hardware and software provided to the end user by a single vendor to a new more diverse open ecosystem There is a trend towards standardized merchant silicon that switch builders base their switch hardware on. Industry standard switch hardware from Original Design Manufacturers will be accessible for customers who can then ‘pick and choose’ from an ecosystem of software offerings Our Arctica line of industry standard switches is part of this new ecosystem that offers that choice The first software stack(s) we are offering are an industry standard stack from Broadcomm and Cumulus Linux, a Linux distribution ported to run on network switchesThe control and management planes are native Linux while the data path is accelerated using switching silicon – running Cumulus customers can leverage the Linux ecosystem for configuring and managing switches, for example
  • As switch hardware is being ‘commoditized’ prices for switch hardware will come down resulting in broader adoption taking advantage of the economies of scaleComplementing industry standard switch hardware are emerging open software standards such as OpenFlow. Open ecosystems foster sharing and customization – an example is Cumulus that allows for re-using existing Linux expertise and tools for switch provisioning and management
  • A cost comparison of a volume discounted Cisco Nexus 3064 10GbE switch with comparable capabilities (48 ports/4 up-links) with Penguin’s 10GbE Arctica switch with shows that the combined price for software and hardware for Arctica is about the same as the support cost for the Cisco switch. The comparison on the right side shows that a Penguin Arctica 10Gb switch is in the same price range as a 1GbE switch from Cisco
