Cultural Studies Virtual Library: Information and Communication on the Internet Cultural Studies Virtual Library: Information and Communication on the Internet Presentation Transcript

    • Cultural Studies Virtual Library: Information and Communication on the Internet Cristina Barros Barreto Programa Avançado de Cultura Contemporânea (PACC) Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Brazil Code 209
    • Cultural Studies Virtual Library: Information and Communication on the Internet This project was designed to analyze the creation and management of Cultural Studies Virtual Library (BVEC) in order to improve its domain as a subject gateway to researchers in the area of Cultural Studies.
    • Cultural Studies Virtual Library: Information and Communication on the Internet We start with the premise that the Internet can collaborate as a space for ► information, dissemination and communication: the coexistence of that which is global and that which is local. "If Latin America enters the globalization world through economics and political deals, then social movements and new demands can also find a privileged space to outline new identities, strategies, policies, strengthening local powers like never before." (HOLLANDA, 2000) The speed and the easy access of the electronic network should collaborate to ► the articulation of information and the connection between individuals and institutions. These premises have guided the main objective of this project, namely ► investigating the interest and the benefits obtained by social movement agents from information offered by academic institutions. We intend to verify the ways in which BVEC has been contributing and can ► further contribute to this process, so that intellectuals, researchers and social movement activists can use this electronic means of information and communication as a space for integration and debate.
    • The Cultural Studies Virtual Library (BVEC) http://www.bibvirtuais.ufrj.br/estudosculturais/index.php is a subject gateway created in 1995 by PROSSIGA, a program pertaining to CNPq, a ► foundation linked to the Ministério da Ciência e Tecnologia, to support Brazilian research, and it is developed by the Programa Avançado de Cultura Contemporânea (PACC) of UFRJ, Brazil. The main characteristic of this virtual library is its classification methodology and site ► inclusion. Each selected site is given a summary of its content which highlights its most relevant information, a description of the services offered and also a direct link to those pages. A search engine allows the user to rapidly localize, in the universe of available data, the themes of his/her interest, while an electronic mail service can be used for user's questions and consultation. The defining theme of the library is Cultural Studies, a field that interrelates several ► branches of Social and Human Sciences. An important aspect regarding the scope of Cultural Studies, which defines some priority choices of this Virtual Library, is the compromise of directly interact with political, cultural and social practices – which are also objects of its studies.
    • Cultural Studies Virtual Library: Information and Communication on the Internet since its creation, BVEC has been having an exponential growth, with an ► expressive current number of 2,900 collected and commented sites. BVEC has been considered by the magazine Internetworld and by the Brazilian ► newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, in their annual roster, one of the 100 best sites in Brazil. Now that BVEC is celebrating 10 years of its existence, and considering that ► new resources for Internet information and communication became available in this period, we are carrying out a project designed to analyze its creation and management and to suggest ways of improving its domain as a classified directory of Internet resources for Cultural Studies. We are recovering the history of BVEC, since its creation to the present, ► analyzing it as a specialized information system for research and communication among students, researchers and social movement actors with a common interest in the themes it addresses.
    • Cultural Studies Virtual Library: Information and Communication on the Internet The methodology of this study consists primarily of: bibliographical data collection - between 1995 until nowadays; ► analysis of primary sources – ► Documents, prepared since the beginning, by the team of PROSSIGA and 1. PACC/UFRJ – which determine the objectives and the means for creating the virtual library; Records of meetings with members of PROSSIGA/CNPq and members of 2. PACC/UFRJ (from 1996 until today); Reports written by coordinators of BVEC and sent to supporting institutions 3. (CNPq and Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa no Rio de Janeiro); Data Treatment Manual by PROSSIGA and Writing Style Manual. 4. interviews (people from the staff, specializes researchers on Cultural ► Studies, members of social movements) analysis of the BVEC site. ►
    • Cultural Studies Virtual Library: Information and Communication on the Internet Which elements will be evaluated: ► specialized online information system ► containing relevant information ► selection and classification; ► structure and access ► management ► search, retrieval; ► services ► assistance, referral ► operation staff “… an evaluation must specify clearly what elements are evaluated with full recognition of the emphasis on what is included and what is excluded.” (SARACEVIC, 2000)
    • Cultural Studies Virtual Library: Information and Communication on the Internet To this moment, through the analysis of primary sources we were able to ► assess the main procedures adopted in the creation of the site: the Library is available online exclusively in Portuguese, in keeping with its ► purpose of emphasizing Brazilian and South American sites, amplifying the presence of this country and continent on the Internet and facilitating the integration between researchers, agents and participants of social movements of these countries. The formation of an interdisciplinary team was fundamental: professionals of ► the information and informatics fields worked side by side with researchers in the content of Cultural Studies. There was also a great investment in training and preparation of the entire ► team: not just an initial training, but a permanent one, with constant brainstorming and problem solving.
    • Cultural Studies Virtual Library: Information and Communication on the Internet Some Figures The software adopted for BVEC offers resources for its management and ► maintenance, including Registration and Supervision Reports, which access is restricted to members of the working staff. Among the reports issued, the Administration Table presented the following results in June 12, 2006: Number of online entries: 2,906 ► Categories with the highest number of entries: ► Collections and references – including the sub-categories: Archives, 1. Databases, Bibliographies, Libraries and Documentation Centers, Virtual Libraries and Museums and Cultural Centers – with a total of 737 entries; Publications – including the sub-categories: Publishers, Books, Articles and 2. other Texts, and Periodicals – with a total of 717 entries; Social Movements – including the sub-categories: Support and Financing, 3. Human Rights, Culture and Education, Infancy and Adolescence, Men and Women, Gays and Lesbians, Ethnic Groups, National Groups, Urban Groups, Research and Information, and Communication Systems – with a total of 637 entries.
    • Cultural Studies Virtual Library: Information and Communication on the Internet This project will last until April, 2007, when we intend to answer this two priority questions : Is The Virtual Library of Cultural Studies an efficient and relevant research ► tool? Does it collaborate for the integration of political, social and cultural practices, ► bringing the academic world and the social movements closer to each other? Finally, We intend to verify the ways in which BVEC has been contributing and can further contribute to its goal, so that intellectuals, researchers and social movement activists can use this electronic means of information and communication as a space for integration and debate.
