  • 1. Pancake Day
  • 2. Do you know another name for Pancake Day? Shrove Tuesday
  • 3. On Shrove Tuesday many Christians make pancakes to use up rich food in their house before starting a period of Lent.
  • 4. Lent is a period of 40 days when many Christians give up things, especially treats and luxuries. Giving up these things is supposed to help make their life simpler so that they can focus on God more clearly.
  • 5. Lent also helps Christians to remember the time that Jesus spent in the desert.
  • 6. Jesus in the Desert
  • 7. After Jesus was baptised he went away to the desert to be alone. He decided that he wanted to pray and think about God for 40 days. Jesus thought so much about God that he did not even eat!
  • 8. The devil did not like it because Jesus only thought about God. He hated it that Jesus was so good all the time. He decided to tempt Jesus and try to make him do bad things.
  • 9. Jesus was very hungry so the devil said, “If you are really the Son of God then use your special powers to turn these stones into bread.” Jesus was hungry but he knew that God wanted him to only use his special powers to help people. His power was not just for feeding himself! Jesus wanted to do the right thing.
  • 10. He knew the best way to answer the devil was to use God’s words. Jesus knew exactly what to say to the devil. He said, “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
  • 11. Next, the devil tried another way to tempt Jesus. He took Jesus to the highest point of a temple. The devil wanted to get Jesus to doubt God’s power. He told Jesus that he should give God a test to see if his power worked. He told Jesus to jump off the temple and see if God’s angels would catch him.
  • 12. But Jesus did not need to give God a test. Jesus already knew that God’s power was stronger than anything in the world. Jesus used God’s word again. He said, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”
  • 13. The devil was getting very angry. He had one more thing he could do to tempt Jesus. Maybe this time he could get Jesus to give in. He took Jesus to the top of a very high mountain. They could see the whole world from the top of the mountain
  • 14. The devil said, “You say you love all the people of the world. You say you want them to go to heaven. How about a deal? I will help all the people of the world go to heaven if you will just do one simple thing. All you have to do is to bow down and worship me instead of God.”
  • 15. Finally, Jesus had had enough. He told the devil to go away. Of course he would never worship him! Jesus loved God. He would only worship God. Jesus used God’s words again. He said, “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.”
  • 16. Finally the devil left Jesus alone. Angels came and helped take care of Jesus after that.
  • 17. Feeling Tempted
  • 18. From time to time, we are all tempted to do the wrong thing. Jesus was strong and resisted temptation, but how would you get on in these situations?
  • 19. Temptation 1 You are really proud that your sister has Justin Bieber’s autograph, but no one at school believes you. Your friend says that you should pinch the autograph from your sister’s room and bring it to school to show everyone. What are you tempted to do? What should you do?
  • 20. Temptation 2 A bully is picking on a new child at school. You know it’s wrong, but are scared that if you don’t join in with the name calling the bully might start picking on you. What are you tempted to do? What should you do?
  • 21. Temptation 3 You have been saving up for ages to buy a new toy. One day on the play ground you find a £5 note. What are you tempted to do? What should you do?
