PSED Physical Development Communication & Language Making Relationships Moving & handling Listening & attention Understanding Speaking • Imaginary world role play; making the outdoor and indoor role play areas themed • Get children to make an imaginary world using the builders tray, wet sand, bubble wrap water, bricks to build a castle for small world characters. Playdough, matchsticks, beads, buttons, pulses. • Go on a treasure hunt around the ARK and the garden. • Children to pretend they are carrying a very heavy bag of treasure across obstacles, e.g. down a small dark track, across rocks with thundering water. • Finding treasure in different materials, e.g. gloop, pumpkin inerds and sorting treasure with tweezers. • Who’s in the cave game. In the hall set up four walls with a cave picture each. Invite children to imagine they are on a trek in search of imaginary world characters, climbing mountains, slide down valleys, swim rivers, swing through trees, using small and large obstacles. • Mark making in shaving foam, the cave of a mermaid, their initials • Threading necklaces mermaids. • Get the children to do a workout, warm up exercises followed by exercises that would help a superhero, power punch, power thrust, and power stamp. Can they think of anymore? Talk about how exercise helps the body, builds muscles, keeps you fit and healthy. Dance Sea creatures swim, but what about a jellyfish (floats), an octopus (swims backwards), a crab (scuttles sideways), small fish dart around while sharks glide slowly, looking for their prey... etc. Respond with movement to calm/stormy music. Parachute games to show wave Be a deep sea diver. Be a ship's mate -actions for 'scrub the decks'/ship ahoy/hoist the sails/walk the plank • Read a variety of books based on imaginary world themes • Choose a story for the children to retell and order using images • Weekly jolly phonics lesson, sound of the week and display section • Children to talk about objects starting with the sound of the week and talk about them. Working wall display for JP • Explore the meaning of new words, rampaging and sleuth, discuss phrases such as ‘criminal mastermind’ • Talk about real and imaginary worlds and how they differ • Encourage role play, small world play and the use of imaginative language • Play ‘I spy’ game with posters...’In the land of make- believe, magic abounds, can you guess who lives there by their first letter sounds?’ • Non-fiction information on winter animals. • Treasure hunt, reinforce prepositions (under, over, on top, behind) • Encourage the children to talk in circle time e.g. weekend news, contributing to superheroes, discussions, topics etc. The ARK - Learning from a child’s interest. Have a nice day!’ • Grant helpful wishes to their friends in reception • Read stories about trying new things, having a go at something they may be unsure of – Hope – Even the worst of troubles can be overcome Managing feelings & behaviour Health and self-care • Discuss the emotions of characters in imaginary worlds, who is likely to be unfriendly, who is kind, who is friendly? • Emphasise the difference between real and pretend actions, how can these incorporated into play, whilst discussing the dangers of some in real life • Discuss mermaids’ behaviour, how actions and words can hurt of help others. Children to come up with ideas on how to teach the pirates to be well behaved • Children to make medals from card and ribbon and present them to those that present superhero qualities by being helpful and kind – link to Tour of France • Mermaid party, talk about healthy foods • Simple instructions on how to teach a mermaid to wash and dry their hands. Display their instructions (photos) in the bathrooms.

There are a variety of stories you could use, and 'Finding Nemo'. You could discuss scales, fins, tentacles, coral reefs etc. Tissue paper – paper to make circles for anemones Small pieces of different coloured sugar paper to collage the turtle. Had boats of different sizes and had the AA writing their estimates on whiteboards and seeing who was the closest, we talked about bigger/smaller • Floating and sinking - What would sink to the bottom of the sea? Lots of different objects to sort and predict what will float/sink • Making boats - Use junk modelling bits, can they make a boat that floats • Waterproof materials - Test different materials to see how much water they soak up/keep out. What would be best to use as a divers suit? Watch a video about a rock pool and talk about the different sea life within it • Learning names of creatures that live in rock pools • Creating a rock pool in the tuff spot Shape, Space & Measures • Repeated patterns • Making sails and flags using shapes • Weighing treasure and comparing weights • Different objects, different sizes.
