Kanini kaseo terrace monitoring 07 06-2012[1]

  1. 1. TO THE KCA COMMUNITYREPORT FROM KANINI KASEO SELF HELP GROUPGreetings from Kanini Kaseo SHG!We are grateful for the continued support you give us in our bench-terrace digging project andwould like to give you an overview of the state of farms. The short April-May rains have been with us after at least 80% of the members having a terrace fromthe terrace digging project going being carried out by the group. The farms adjacent to these bench-terraces have been found to have better crops due to availabilityof water and reduced soil erosion. We shall be sending you photos of the crops to give you an image of the progress as you may need itat intervals of 3 to 3 weeks. These photos were taken on 7th June 2012.Below is a photo showing crops growing in a terraced farm. However this is not the case in all farms as each member so far has one bench terrace which is notyet enough to achieve the projects objective. At least five bench terraces in each farm will holdwater thus reducing surface run off and soil erosion. In farms without terraces the crops did not do well and as in the photograph below, most of thecrops are even drying up.
  2. 2. In all the above cases the crops are maize and cow peas.Unfortunately, the rains seem to be failing us again especially those who delayed planting. The group still continues to dig terraces and hope for better yields in the subsequent rains.Thank you and God bless you,SignedMrs. Domitilla KisiluThe secretary-Kanini Kaseo SHG
