  2. 2. <ul><li>Born Thomas Lanier Williams in Columbus, Mississippi. </li></ul><ul><li>Moved to St Louis in 1918. </li></ul><ul><li>1929 attended University of Missouri. </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>1931 Worked at a shoe company where he met a man named Stanley Kowalski. </li></ul><ul><li>1939 -Moved to New Orleans. </li></ul><ul><li>Changed his name to Tennessee. </li></ul><ul><li>Wrote for the WPA. </li></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li>1944 - First play The Glass Menagerie staged in Chicago, then New York for over five hundred performances. </li></ul><ul><li>The play won New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award </li></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>1947 - A Streetcar Named Desire wins the Pulitzer Prize. </li></ul><ul><li>1951- The play is made into a highly successful film starring Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh. </li></ul>
  6. 7. <ul><li>1955 - Cat on a Hot Tin Roof wins the Pulitzer Prize. </li></ul><ul><li>1958 - Made into a movie starring Paul Newman and Ellizabeth Taylor. </li></ul>

  9. 11. <ul><li>1961- Williams’ long time companion, Frank Merlo died, plunging Williams into depression and dependence on prescription drugs. </li></ul><ul><li>Williams wrote more plays, two novels, and an autobiography, but was no longer a successful author. </li></ul><ul><li>He died in 1983. </li></ul>
