  • WordPress gets it right.
It’s designed for blogs out-of-the-box, but its engineered on a content management framework.
  • Shopp is built on this premise. It has out-of-the-box features, but these features they’re designed to be completely extended, customized and in some cases even replaced.
  • Develops videos and imagery for churches to use during worship services
Mostly for digital delivery, but some shipped items
  • Started in 2005 on Zen Cart
(not web developers) had to learn PHP on their own
Managed content with individual PHP pages
A redesign project was started in the fall of 2008
  • Chose WordPress from running a different blog site
Took 500 hours to design and develop
WordPress was setup and waiting for e-commerce
    Catalog…
  • Seminar sell page
This is a page maintained through WordPress using static pages with a custom layout
    Catalog products…
  • Seminar tickets
    Otherwise mostly digital
Some shipped products (CDs, DVDs, Software, Tshirts, apparel)
  • 15K moved over from ZenCart
Custom import script was developed to move customer records
  • Landing page
Customized to only show bestselling products
  • hierarchical category menu by Shopp
    uses a sidebar widget
    incorporated into the theme
  • Shows off products on sale
  • A product page with image previews
    Detailed descriptions
  • Product images use the popular jQuery Thickbox plugin that Shopp utilizes out-of-the-box
  • They make use of Shopp’s support for multi-faceted product variations
    eg. size and color
Customized to show variations in the category
  • Different prices for variations
  • All customized to look like part of the site through normal development standards
XHTML markup and stylesheets with Shopp template files and template tags
  • Shopp can support 3 account modes: No accounts, Shopp-only logins, WordPress-integrated
A custom signup process for WordPress+Shopp accounts
  • So how have they done since moving over?
That’s what it comes down to right?
  • Absolute Unique Visitors for Jan 2009 prior to launch
  • After launch in Feb 2009
Maintained an avg of 10k the entire year with higher and lower months fluctuating with their industry
  • In the 1st year of using Shopp compared to ZenCart
  • Regardless of template systems, without being able to override everything
without being designed to be redesigned
these sites would not be possible.
