    • INTRODUCTIONTimor-Leste• Timor-Leste became a sovereign state in 2002• Population is 1.1 million• Largely rural population that is difficult to access.• For rural areas improved sanitation coverage is 18%• For urban areas improved sanitation coverage is 61%
    • NATIONAL PLANS National Basic Sanitation Policy• National Policy was approved in March 2012• National Policy Objective: To reduce death and disease and bring about social, economic, educational and environmental gains for all through the safe elimination of harmful waste from the environment and the practice of healthy behaviours.• National Policy objective required outcomes to achieve the over arching objective:
    • NATIONAL PLANS National Sanitation Strategic Plan• National sanitation strategic plan development started in November 2011• Plan for the capital Dili has been drafted• Decentralized Waste Water Treatment Systems planned for Dili• Guidance developed ready for district level strategic planning Strategic plan for rural areas: 2020 Sanitation Status
