Where have we come from: Community perception ? “….This industry may benefit from some form of industry based accreditation scheme, similar to those operating in the accounting field, so that customers can gain a level of confidence about the consultants that they may engage” (Maxwell, 2004 p. 271).

Australian OHS Professional Certification Board • Scope: • Certification of Generalist OHS Professionals and Practitioners • Functions • Approving process and procedures • Determining fees • Establishing protocols for the use of certification marks • Oversighting any outsourced activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures • Promote the benefits of certification • Maintaining links with like purpose national and international bodies

OHS Professional Certification Four categories • Certified OHS Practitioner • Implementer, oversight and drive compliance • Effectively use a range of OHS tools and processes • Work under supervision (may be remote) • Certified Graduate OHS Professional • Certified Professional • Core of profession • Problem solvers based on conceptual and technical knowledge, analysis of evidence and critical thought mediated by experience • Likely to work solo or give direction to others • Chartered OHS Professional • Designer of strategy and influential with senior managers • High level specialist or strategic skills • Consider broader organisational and social context

The OHS Practitioner - A special note • Certification promotes a specified role for OHS practitioners (which is currently the situation is US and EU but not Australia) • OHS Practitioner role is an important role in its own right, not just a step on the way to OHS Professional • OHS Practitioner (implementer) role requires a different set of skills to that of OHS Professional • Certification will be accompanied by a communication strategy which will benefit all practitioners and professionals

  18. 18. When will it start? • First meeting AOHSPCB 1st April 2014 in • Appointment of outsourced agency • Launch in June 2014 • Transition processes for current financial members of OHS professional associations • Set submission dates

What will I have to do? • If you are a current members of an OHS professional body you will receive information • Graded - Complete questionnaire • Non graded • Complete application • Provide evidence of qualifications • Provide names of referees (for interview) • Complete practice or portfolio report • Complete reflective journal (for ChartOHSProf) • Complete ethics declaration • If not a current member of an OHS professional body you will need to join one
