Remember me? • I’m the guy who watched you being bullied but didn’t know what to do. • I’m your colleague who was too scared to say something because I didn’t want to be the next target – I didn’t want to lose anyone's friendship. • I’m the guy that sat behind you & felt just as hurt by the bullying, it still affects me today. • I worried, was stressed & didn’t want to come to work because I felt helpless, guilty, shameful & powerless. • I’m the guy who heard the verbal criticism, name-calling & teasing. I just walked away because I didn’t want to see you being bullied. • I like you, felt that knot in the pit of my stomach when she entered our work station. I should have spoken up. Remember me? • I’m your friend that could have been that upstander but said it wasn’t my business. • I witnessed you repeatedly being asked to do tasks, you should not have, I had the power to change things & did nothing. • I’m the bystander who laughed at the bullies behaviour. • I’m the guy who watched the bullying from a distance but continued tapping away at my keyboard. • I’m the Apprentice that heard the verbal abuse, belittling & poor behaviour by the Boss.   • 9. • Bullying affects & hurts everyone involved. • Bystanders care, want bullying to stop & have more power . • Their power cannot be underestimated. • Those who stand by & watch are part of the bullying – known as part-bullying. • 70% of employees fall into the largest most powerful group but yet only 15% do something. • Greater the number of bystanders - less likely for intervention.   • 12. • Kitty Genovese, 28 was walking home at 3:15 am - March 13, 1964. • Attacked on a residential St in Kew Gardens, NY. • Winston Moseley stabbed Genovese several times before being scared away by Bystander Robert Mozer, who said: “Hey, leave that girl alone!” • Moseley returned 10 minutes later, attacked a dying Genovese in an alleyway, stabbing her more & raping her as she died. • 2 attacks took place over 30 minutes - 38 people saw the attack, heard the screams & ignored it.   • 13. • 1 woman called police, after being alerted by a neighbour who said he “didn't want to get involved.” 2nd witness made a similar remark, saying, “I didn't want my husband to get involved.” • 1 couple thought the attack was “a lover’s quarrel.” Another witness claimed he heard the second attack but was too tired & went back to bed.” • Loudon Wainwright wrote “we are becoming a callous, chickenhearted & immoral people.” • Case generated a national scandal & prompted psychological studies on the behaviour of bystanders.   • 14. • “Bystander effect,” or “Genovese syndrome,” describes the phenomenon - an individual is less likely to act in an emergency situation if others are present. • Keltner & Marsh found witnesses of the murder may have seen other apt lights go on, or seen each other in the windows & assumed someone else would help. • End result - bystander effect - bystander apathy - bystander indifference.   • 15. • Darley & Latane - individuals conversed over intercom & 1 pretended to have a seizure: • When 2 people involved - 85% assisted. • 3 involved - 62% assisted. • 6 involved - 31% assisted. • Greater the number of bystanders - less likely for intervention. • Study attributed results to “diffusion of responsibility” (when people are witness to a situation, they felt less personal responsibility to intervene & looked to each other for help).   • 18. • I thought someone else was going to say or do something. • Fell intimidated, confused & scared of reprisal – could be the next target & the bully could turn on me. • None of my business, I don’t want to get involved. • Afraid of confrontation & process. • Nothings wrong really – why make a fuss about it. • Lack confidence to do something. • Not sure what actually occurred, don’t know what’s going on. • Can’t be bothered.   • 19. • He/she deserves it. • Don't want to be named or singled out. • Don’t really know the victim or perpetrator. • Fear losing my job or being made redundant. • Nothing was actioned when I last complained to HR, so why bother. • Don’t want to step outside the comfort zone, better to ignore it as it will go away. • Not qualified to handle issue, don’t know what to do & can’t make a decision.   • 23. • Instigate - bullying by prodding the bully to begin. • Join in - bullying once it’s begun. • Followers - positive towards the bullying - take active part but don’t usually initiate the bullying, (don’t play the leading role). • Supportive or passive bullies - don’t join in but actively & openly support & encourage the bullying by watching, laughing, cheering or making comments that further stimulate the bully - (like the bullying but don’t show outward signs of support - don’t realize they’re contributing to the problem). • Passive bystanders provide the audience - (the bully wants this & silent acceptance allows them to continue their behaviour).   • 24. • Disengaged onlookers - don’t get involved, take a stand or participle actively - say its none of my business & wait until someone else does something. • Passive defenders - dislike the bullying & think they should help but do nothing. • Defender - dislikes the bullying & tries to help. • Observers - see the bullying & may feel they’re in an unsafe environment & won’t act. Bystanders who don’t intervene may experience: • Pressure - to participate in the bullying. • Anxiety - about speaking to anyone. • Powerlessness - to stop it. • Fear - of associating with the victim or the bully. • Guilt - for not having defended the victim.   • 29. • Could be the catalyst for the victim to speak up. • Lets the victim know they’re not alone because in most cases a bullied person does have overwhelming feelings of isolation, alienation & loneliness. • Directly intervene - discouraging the bully, defending victim or redirecting situation. • Assist & seek assistance - rally support from colleagues to stand up against behaviour & report it. • Support - approach victim & inform them they’re aware of the situation & say it’s not right & display empathy & sympathy.
