  2. 2. ORGANISATIONAL STRATEGY • Reduce no. of stage 3 and 4 PI’s • Pressure injury is the responsibility of all health professionals • Target our stage 2 PI’s • DVD “ I Thought I Would Die From It” has been provided to more than 40 organisations
  3. 3. ORGANISATIONAL STRATEGY • Meet the National Standards for PI prevention • Focus on patient’s and families
  4. 4. KEY PROBLEMS • Patients not educated as to their “risk level” • Educational flyers not readily accessible • Patients and /or families not encouraged to participate in own care
  5. 5. AIMS OF RESEARCH PROJECT 1. Determine what is the most effective mode of providing information 2. Educate patients and carers/ relatives how to reduce their risk level 3. Establish partnerships in care - improve patient experience 4. Reduce the no. and severity of hospital acquired PI’s
  6. 6. BASELINE DATA PATIENT OR FAMILY MEMBER (110) • 70% knew what a pressure sore /bedsore was • 65% were able to identify at least one cause • 86% hadn’t received any PI prevention education • 54% preferred written information • 70% indicated they would watch a DVD
  7. 7. BASELINE DATA STAFF RESPONSES (150) • 47% stated they always educated their pts • 48% stated they only discussed PI prevention sometimes • Content of information was variable
  8. 8. PILOT RESEARCH PROJECT • Patient DVD to be shown on bedside TV within 36 hours of admission. • Nursing staff to provide patient PI brochure to reinforce information Check your skin for any red spots Get up and go for a walk

  10. 10. AIMS OF PROJECT PRIMARY AIM is to determine: • Knowledge levels before and after DVD • Level of understanding of the information • To what extent patients use this knowledge to be involved in their care SECONDARY AIM is to measure : • The number and severity of HA PI’s
  11. 11. LESSONS LEARNT • Cost benefit v’s quality of production • Consumer input vital: testing of content message to be communicated • Visual graphics are necessary to communicate extent of problem
