Wiorogórska – Information literacy from the Polish-French perspectiveMAJOR FINDINGS:• lack of awareness:The information users who are not aware of existenceof certain resources or tools or who cannot explore all theirfunctionalities (like: advanced options, data screening, datasorting, etc.) either abandon the use of these resources or usethem superficially and do not benefit from their wholerichness.Two major factors:• lack of specialised library instruction, dedicated to doctoralstudents (in the case of Poland)• lack of promotion or popularisation of such instruction amongdoctoral students and lecturers who could encourage theirstudents to participate (in the case of France).

Wiorogórska – Information literacy from the Polish-French perspectiveIMPLICATIONS:This study :• might be helpful for librarians to understand users’ needs and todefine the gaps in the library offer• highlightes the importance of the IL education at the universityforum• presents a set of implications that might be considered by thepolicy makers as well as by the library and universityadministrators• emphasises the need of professionalization of pedagogical roleof librarians• brings attention to the need of enhanced promotion of libraryservices and library’s educational offer• poses a critical reflection on libraries acquisition policy relatedboth to scientific journals (printed and electronic) and tools, like:multisearching systems, bibliography management systems, ore-learning platforms

Wiorogórska – Information literacy from the Polish-French perspectiveMAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS• This is the first study in its kind• This is also the first comparative study realised during theimplementation of Bologna Process• The wish for this study is that its findings and conclusions wouldfind application• This study identifies also the issues that might be consideredand implemented by libraries. The main one is the reinforcementof the role and importance of IL

Wiorogórska – Information literacy from the Polish-French perspectiveFURTHER STUDIES DIRECTIONS• An in-depth and cross-disciplinary study research to investigatecomplex relationships between field of study and information needs• Need for work on the universities forums, aiming at legitimization ofIL and its implementation into university strategies and curricula inboth countries• The cooperation between librarians and faculty and commonadvocacy for IL at the university administration level is absolutelyrequired• To enhance the research on IL and information users in bothcountries, a “library research groups” might be established toguarantee studies systematically conducted with regard to thecurrently applied social sciences methodology
