  6. 6.  In prosthodontia ,few restoration are made to fit patient directly,most restoration are made to fit a cast.If the cast is not accurate the restoration cannot possibly fit the patient satisfactorily REQUISITES FOR CASTS  1.All surfaces to be contacted by the prosthesis should be accurate and free of voids or nodules. Removal of nodules resulting from voids or bubbles in the impression is essential, but hand carving in critical areas is, of course, not acceptable. www.indiandentalacademy.com
  7. 7. 2. The surface of the cast should be hard, dense, and free of any grinding sludge left by the cast trimmer. 3. The cast extensions should include all of the area available for denture support, for example, 3 to 4 mm beyond the hamular notches on the maxillary cast and 3 to 4 mm beyond the retro molar pad on the mandibular cast. 4. The peripheral roll should be complete and approximately 3 to 4 mm deep.www.indiandentalacademy.com
  8. 8. 5.Side walls of the cast should be vertical and may be tapered slightly outward but should not be undercut. 6, The base of the cast should be not less than 15 mm thick at the thinnest place, and the lingual region of mandibular casts should be trimmed flat and smooth.   13. 13.  8.Impression is rinsed thoroughly in 2% potassium sulphate solution to improve cast surface  9.Gentle stream of air is used to remove excess moisture  10.Excess moisture accumulation in cusp indentation may produce soft chalky surfaces on cast.Absorbent tissue paper strips is used to remove the moisture from cusp indentations  11.Boxing of the impression with wax or pumice should not be done (Wax will not adhere to impression and pumice/plaster will dehydrate the impression and cause distortion)www.indiandentalacademy.com
  14. 14.  12.The impression is then poured which is correctly proportioned,since maximum physical properties can be achieved only with correct proportioning  13.All norms of proper cast pouring are adhered to (i.e proper manipulation,proper mixing time,gentle vibration,gentle vibration during flow,ensuring no air entrapment etc ) strictly, to obtain a good cast  13.Pouring the cast in two stages results in improved cast surface over the one stage method (Anatomical portion – first pour/Base – Second pour ) www.indiandentalacademy.com

  17. 17. Other impressions  2.Elastomeric Impressions Impressions made with this material are beaded and boxed prior to pouring casts. SUMMARY Methods for care of different impressions and pouring of the casts were reviewed until now. Excellent casts can be obtained with these impression materials. Alginate,despite its relatively easy technique, can be easily abused. To assure the best results, it is important to follow the procedure outlined, which is known to be effective for producing superior casts. This detailed procedure is extremely important, since the cast is the first step in obtaining a successful prosthesis.www.indiandentalacademy.com

  20. 20. A functional impression is generally made by adding an impression base to the removable partial denture framework- Usually, the functional impression is made for a distal extension base, whereas the master cast is adequate for most tooth- supported edentulous areas. Functional impressions may be made by a variety of impression materials, including impression wax, zinc oxide eugenol paste, rubber base, and silicone impression materials. www.indiandentalacademy.com
  21. 21. The laboratory procedure involves making a corrected. or altered, cast. Ridge area that were recorded in the functional impression arc removed from the cast. The framework is seated on the cast, and new ridge areas are poured in dental stone. The four techniques for pouring corrected cast impressions are boxing with a 1)plaster pumice mix and wax, 2)beading and boxing with wax, 3)beading with wax and the two stage pour 4)North Carolina Technique. www.indiandentalacademy.com
  22. 22. BOXING CORRECTED CAST IMPRESSION WITH PLASTER/PUMICE MIX AND WAX Boxing with a plaster/pumice mix and wax works well with a corrected cast impression made with rubber base or elastomeric impression materials www.indiandentalacademy.com
  23. 23. PROCEDURE 1. A rubber base corrected cast impression is received in the laboratory. Use a sharp knife to trim away the excess impression material 2. Outline the master cast for removal of the ridge areas www.indiandentalacademy.com

Summary  Methods of boxing and pouring corrected cast (functional) impressions were reviewed until now.  All have several potential problems in common, and each has its own specific problems.  Care must be taken in every laboratory step to avoid these problems.  The fit of the removable partial denture depends on the procedures employed in pouring the functional impression. Custom trays Custom trays are usually made as acrylic resin trays.  Custom tray materials are usually not applied directly over the casts.Spacing material such as wax or tinfoil substitute is used so as to provide relief for the impression material when the impression is removed from an undercut. For alginate relief should be ¼ inch (0.6 cm) and for elastomeric materials a thickness of 1/8 inch ( 0.3 cm) is necessary www.indiandentalacademy.com

  153. 153. DUPLICATION AND REFRACTORY CASTS     Prepared master casts are duplicated to produce an exact copy of the master cast in investment material. This cast is called the refractory cast because it contains ceramic material that permits it to withstand burnout temperature of about 1300 degree F( 704 degree C). The framework pattern is formed on the refractory cast using the wax and plastic.   154. 154. REVERSIBLE HYDROCOLLOID (AGAR) MOLDS   Reversible hydrocolloid (agar) is used most often to make the mold for duplication.  Agar hydrocolloid is prepared by grinding or chopping the colloid into small pieces and heating it until it liquefies at 212 degree F(100degree C).  The melted colloid can be stored for a few days in a hydrocolloid storage unit at 135degree to 140degree F. www.indiandentalacademy.com

The thin alginate mix can be poured into a duplicating flask. Alginate is as accurate as the agar hydrocolloid; however, it is much more expensive for volume duplication, since it is not reversible and only one duplicate can be made from each mix.   157. 157.  A duplicating flask will be used to support the cast and confine the hydrocolloid, since it aids in controlling shrinkage.  It is a simple design, consisting of three pieces: the base, the body and the reservoir ring.   158. 158. Procedure  The master cast must be thoroughly soaked in clear slurry water. A minimum of 30 minutes soaking is usually required.  It is a good idea to stand the cast on end as it soaks. As the cast becomes wet, it changes color. There should be at least ¼ inch clearance in all directions.   160. 160. 2. Make sure the outer rim of the flask base is filled with modeling clay, and seat the body of the flask firmly into this rim.   161. 161. Place the reservoir ring in the body of the flask. Place a small ball of modeling clay adjacent to but nor over the two vent holes in the top surface of the body of the flask.
