  3. 3. Forming the archwire To form this archwire, a 2-3 mm helix is bent immediately distal to the lateral incisors Closing loops are superimposed on these helices on the buccal aspect). The down leg of the closing loop is turned horizontally as it crosses the archwire. A bayonet bend is made immediately distal to the loop, using a thin-nose plier such as #139 The purpose of this bayonet bend is to compensate for the three thicknesses of wire so that the cuspids will not be placed too far buccally. Lateral inset and molar bayonet bends are placed where necessary, as well as molar tip back bends. When the complete archwire is placed on a flat surface, there should be an exaggerated curve of Spee with the incisor segment arching off the horizontal www.indiandentalacademy.com
