  4. 4. inLab FIB • inLab FIB has more than three decades of expertise in developing applications using the latest ICT technologies, collaborating in different research and innovation projects and creating customized solutions for public administrations, industry, large companies and SMEs. • Located in the International Campus of Excellence BKC (Barcelona Knowledge Campus), we keep strong alliances and collaborations with other research groups of UPC and international R&D collaborations (EU FP, Concert Japan,…). • inLab FIB integrates academic staff from different UPC departments and its own technical staff. Graduate and under-graduate students collaborate in R+D projects through our Talent Program. 4

  16. 16. Smart mobility - Forecasting It is not possible to install sensors in ALL streets. It is necessary to look for different ways Forecasting models for traffic and travel information

Traffic and travel forecasting In the same way as weather, Traffic may be calculated and predicted from a limited number of sensors through the use of models Example: Weather forecast The model makes use of a small set of data and provides us with detailed information Meteorological model Even more: the model can predict the future evolution of weather conditions Limited number of weather sensors

Traffic and travel forecasting New generation traffic and travel forecasting models • Current available models and services are useful to provide information for long-term traffic planning or they provide information only based on past information. • New generation forecasting models are required to provide high-quality traffic and travel information, specially for short term predictions used to plan a trip. Example of applications/projects: • Electric vehicle trip planning • Multimodal trip planning, combining different transport modes

Traffic Data Analytics We are working on most of the services required for Smart Mobility or for dealing with traffic from the perspective of analytics, including data filtering, completion and fusion, the interoperability of data and the processing of huge amounts of data, or Big Data. Statistical models to identify and eliminate the outlier observations Missing data supply Procedures of spacetime traffic state reconstruction from heterogeneous data sources

Dynamic traffic flow models The result of data fusion composed by flows, speeds and travel times, with a traffic model, is a complete picture of all the network: info for all streets, not just main avenues or streets with sensors. This complete picture is obtained using dynamic traffic flow models

Dynamic ridesharing • Point to point instant dynamic ridesharing • A pilot test is going on in a city in the Barcelona metropolitan area to share private vehicles to go to the train station located in the closest city. Users can demand the transport just a few minutes in advance. • It uses mobile technology and a tracking server. The main challenges of this project are not technological but related to social and security issues. More information:
  24. 24. Rapid Prototyping for urban design Rapid Prototyping: Tool/Method to support agile low cost urban design decisions. Used to optimize the location of elements such as traffic sensors, eVehicle charging points, accessibility analysis or location of emergency services, etc. It answers the questions: • How many? • Where to locate them? Based on research on Location Problems.

Decision support systems: Traffic Management Decision Support System based on the Macro Fundamental Diagram and, through the proper processing of the data from all detectors, allows to identify on real time the present traffic state of a urban area and its evolution. This information is the used, in combination with traffic models, for the implementation of proactive traffic control strategies.

ALSTOM Project • Web application that allows the user to locate the position of all trains that are operating at a given moment. • Remote collection of train incidences, that are displayed in real time using a geographical map (OpenStreetMap) and a web browser. • It’s been used for early detection of incidences in AVE and AVANT trains and maintenance planning improvement. 34

Advance Information System for the Mobility of People and Vehicles • Combine traditional traffic supervision technologies with the latest available or soon to be available ICT. • Data Filtering, Merging and Completion Module. – Filtering of data, integration of new types of data that had not traditionally been used in traffic information systems, especially those that allow real-time treatment of information. – Development of completion models for missing data coming from the ICTs. – Development of data merging models that combine large amounts of data sources unprecedented in the field of traffic.   39. 39. NZEB. Opti-Sim in Sustainability • Co-operative simulator for evaluation, analysis and optimization of sustainability (environmental, economic and social) in order to identify the best solutions for building design and construction of NZEB (Net Zero Energy Buildings) 39

Simulation of demographic evolution of a population • Highly scalable simulator to study the demographic evolution of a population and to reproduce the internal interactions among individuals. • It’s a tool to help in analysis and decision making processes for policy (for example in migration policies). • It uses agent-based modeling and supercomputing and can be applied and extended to other research areas such as economics, archeology, psychology or sociology. 40

RAFFI: Online Banking AntiFraud Detection System • Pioneering research that seeks to optimize the prevention and realtime detection of financial fraud attempts against different channels of electronic banking (web, mobile phones and digital television). • Modelling based on users’ behaviour • Detection of mules and man in the browser attacks 41

The objective was to improve the prediction of the Cardiovascular Diseases and Diabetes. • Colaboration with IDESCAT (Catalan Institut for Statistics) for the 2006 Catalan Health Survey 43

Simulation of the implementation of a fleet of AGV in the Prat de Llobregat production plant • Integration of a fleet of automated guided vehicles (AGV) • Optimize movements in order to serve the planned daily production planning and to detect dead-locks points • Real time simulation embedded in the production system. Our services are specially adapted to the needs of informatics engineering studies. • • • • • Services are designed to allow students to do advanced laboratory practices on computer security or administration of operating systems, without compromising other computers. We also configure security settings for tests involved in continuous assessment and the exam period that take place at the computer rooms.
