  • http://www.federaltimes.com/article/20111120/AGENCY02/111200301/1055/AGENCYThe wealth of information promised by these pioneering efforts has opened a Pandora’s Box ofchallenges in data acquisition, controlled secure sharing of access to distributed databases, distributed data processing, managed distribution, large-scale multi-dimensional visualization, and interdisciplinary collaboration across national and international networks, on a scaleunprecedented in the history of science. E-Science faces unprecedented challenges in terms of:(1) the data-intensiveness of the work (as the data being processed, distributed and analyzedmove from terabytes to petabytes to exabytes), (2) the complexity of the data (extracting detailfrom overwhelming datasets generated by instruments), (3) the timeliness of data transfers(whether bulk transfers for remote storage, smaller transfers for distributing computing andanalysis, or real-time transfers for collaboration), and (4) the global extent and multi-level of thecollaborations, leading to the need for international teams to collaborate and share data-intensivework in fundamentally new ways.An integrated cyberinfrastructure promises to produce the first distributed systems environmentserving “virtual organizations” on a global scale. The new information technologies derived byenabling the needs of e-science communities can have wide-ranging effects on research as wellas industrial and commercial operations. Resilient self-aware systems, able to support largevolumes of robust Terabyte and larger transactions, and to adapt to a changing workload, canprovide a strong foundation for the distributed data-intensive business processes of multinationalcorporations of the future. These new systems can also lead to new modes of interactionbetween people and “persistent information” in their daily lives. Learning to provide, efficientlymanage, and absorb this information in a persistent, collaborative environment will have aprofound transformational effect on our society.http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CB4QFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fciteseerx.ist.psu.edu%2Fviewdoc%2Fdownload%3Fdoi%3D10.1.1.72.5841%26rep%3Drep1%26type%3Dpdf&ei=iH_KTsSvFuTt0gGs2o3vDw&usg=AFQjCNFdgH2h84mUqfPXnxxE-vjmqeOEsw&sig2=OSD7UmrIQPJz00HwdXZmSg
