The inspired author is seeking peace in a world that often provides none. “ The background of the psalm may well be God’s miraculous deliverance of Jerusalem from Sennacherib, the great Assyrian monarch. The psalm does not provide extensive evidence upon which to make a determination, but it does contain some hints.” (Eddie Cloer, Psalms 1-50 , pg. 635) <ul><li>Written by “sons of Korah” (superscription) </li></ul><ul><li>Second Kings 18 and 19? </li></ul>

  4. 4. Protection (verses 1-3) <ul><li>God is “abundantly available for help in tight places.” </li></ul><ul><li>God’s protection is AVAILABLE. (He is a very present help.) </li></ul><ul><li>God’s protection is DEPENDABLE. </li></ul><ul><li>God protects His own (Esther, Moses, Stephen, Paul). </li></ul><ul><li>No need to worry! (Philippians 4:6; Matthew 6:25,27,34; Luke 21:34). </li></ul>

Paradise (verses 4-5) <ul><li>In the event that is life, we need a place of retreat. </li></ul><ul><li>World = raging oceans (v. 2); Where God is = calm river (v. 4-5) </li></ul><ul><li>This paradise is: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>R eal (“There IS a river…”) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>R efreshing (“…whose streams make glad the city of God”) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>R edeeming (“God will help her when morning dawns”) </li></ul></ul>

Power (verses 6-8) <ul><li>The power of God’s D ialect (word) (v. 6) </li></ul><ul><ul><li>This “melting” is figurative, BUT </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Second Peter 3:10—literal! </li></ul></ul><ul><li>The power of God’s D efense (v. 7) </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Deliverance (Psalm 18:50; Proverbs 21:31) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Innocence (Psalm 59:16-17) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Confidence (Exodus 19:5; Hebrews 12:22-24) </li></ul></ul><ul><li>The power of God’s D oings (works) (v. 8) </li></ul><ul><ul><li>First Chronicles 16:8-14; Psalm 28:5; Ephesians 1:18-20 </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>“ To God be the glory, great things He hath done!” </li></ul></ul>

First Corinthians 15:54ff) and peace (Luke 2:14). </li></ul><ul><li>Different from what the world calls “peace.” </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Not absence of conflict (Matthew 10:34ff) </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Our victory is different, too. </li></ul><ul><li>The peace God provides involves </li></ul><ul><ul><li>R elationship </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>R eliance </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>R est </li></ul></ul>

  12. 12. Praise (verses 10-11) <ul><li>God WILL be exalted (verse 10). </li></ul><ul><li>When we think about the Protection, the Paradise, the Power and the Peace of God, we will want to Praise Him! </li></ul>
