                                               A Mangrove Trees
A mangrove is a tropical marine tree or shrub of the genus Rhizopora. Mangroves have special aerial
roots and salt-filtering tap roots that enable them to thrive in brackish water (brackish water is salty, but not
as salty as sea water).
There are several species of mangrove trees found all over the world. Some prefer more salinity,
while others like to be very close to a large fresh water source (such as a river). Some prefer areas that are
sheltered from waves. Some species have their roots covered with sea water every day during huge tide.
Other species grow on dry land, but are still part of the ecosystem.
Mangroves need to keep their trunk and leaves above the surface of the water. Yet they also need to
be firmly attached to the ground, so they are not moved by waves. There are three types of mangrove roots
that play an important role for it.
    1. Support roots which directly pierce the soil

    2. Level-growing roots which twist upwards and downward, with the upward twist emerging on the
          water surface.

    3. Level-growing roots whose downward twists (sub-roots) appear on the water surface.
Any parts of root that appears above the water flows oxygen to the plant under water surface. As the
soil begins to build up, these roots produce additional roots that become embedded in the soil.
20. The main idea of the text is ....

    a. Mangroves grow on dry land

    b. Mangroves are tropical marine trees

    c. There are many species of mangroves

    d. Mangrove roots filter the salt of the sea-water

    e. Mangrove roots are attached firmly to the ground

21. Mangroves need to keep their trunk and leaves above the surface ...... (par 3)
The word their on the sentence refers to ....
    a. Leaves

    b. Trunk

    c. Surface

    d. Mangroves

    e. Types

22. We can conclude that most mangrove trees ...

    a. need salt to grow

    b. grow on dry land

    c. grow on sheltered areas

    d. get oxygen from the water

    e. grow near fresh water sources

                                               Learning English
Learning English through music and songs can be very enjoyable. You can mix pleasure with
learning when you listen to a song and exploit the song as a means to your English progress. Some
underlying reason can be drawn to support the idea why we use songs in language learning.
Firstly, “the song stuck in my head” Phenomenon (the echoing in our minds of the last song we heard
after leaving a restaurant, shopping malls, etc.) can be both enjoyable and sometimes unnerving. This
phenomenon also seems to reinforce the idea that songs work on our short-and-long term memory.
Secondly, songs in general also use simple conversational language, with a lot of repetition, which is
just what many learners look for sample text. The fact that they are effective makes them many times more
motivating than other text. Although usually simple, some songs can be quite complex syntactically, lexically
and poetically, and can be analyzed in the same way as any other literary sample.
Furthermore, song can be appropriated by listener for their own purpose. Most pop songs and
probably many other types don’t have precise people, place or time reference.
In addition, songs are relaxing. They provide variety and fun, and encourage harmony within oneself and
within one group. Little wonder they are important tools in sustaining culture, religion, patriotism and yeas,
even revolution.
Last but not least, there are many learning activities we can do with songs such as studying grammar,
practicing selective listening comprehension, translating songs, learning vocabulary, spelling and culture.
From the elaboration above, it can be concluded that learning through music and songs, learning
English can be enjoyable and fun.
23. The type of the text above is …
         a. Analytical exposition
         b. Hortatory exposition
         c. Narrative
         d. Discussion
         e. Explanation

24. What is the communicative purpose of the text?
         a. To tell the reader about the songs
         b. To entertain the reader with the songs
         c. To show the reader the use of songs
         d. To explain above the songs
         e. To persuade the reader to use songs in learning language
25. What is the text about ….
          a. Learning songs

          b. Very enjoyable music
          c. The phenomenon
          d. Music listeners
          e. Using songs in language learning

Inner discipline, one that comes from an understanding of the set rules and regulation, is the highest

Good schools create competitive students who can organize themselves effectively in society, so that
everyone gets a quality life as a result of the ethics and values learned for as long as 12 years.

National Exam in Pros and Cons

National exam becomes the hot topic in most of discussions. Though the Supreme Court has rejected an appeal
by the government on the organization of the national exams, the controversy over whether it is necessary to maintain
the national exams (UN) has continued. Some debates include the primary questions such as; does the quality of
Indonesia education depend on the national exam? Will the quality of the Indonesian education system worsen without
national exam?
People, who support the national exam, explain that the quality of the Indonesia education system will drop
without the national exam, so they try to defend the current system.
However there are people who disagree with the opinion. Those who against this national exam kept in our
high school education say that it doesn't need the national exams because the quality of education does not just depend
on the national exam. Further, the national exam only measures a small portion of students' competence in specific
subjects, and does not measure students' competences throughout the semester.
In fact, the national examination can still be useful as an instrument to evaluate or detect the level of students'
cognitive competence in several subjects, on a national scale.

32. What is the best title for the text?
    a. Indonesian Educational System Worsen

Why Young Men Turn to the Sea
As the job opportunity is increasing limited on the land, more and more young men are turning to the
sea for a living. Some of them choose to work on a ship only after they have failed to get a job on a land.
However, many young men actually would rather work on the sea than on the land, in my opinion, there are
several reasons that account for increasing interest in pursuing maritime profession.
Firstly, our country is made up of many lands. We surrounded by water. It is not surprising that many
people begin to love the sea. In order to be able to spend more time near the sea, they decide to work there.
Many of them spend their whole lives on water.
Secondly, many school drops out on the country as well as those young men who have just
finished their education on school are looking for jobs at the same time. Competition for seeking jobs is
therefore great. Many fail to get work in offices or factories, so they turn to the sea as a last resort
Thirdly, many young men face problem at home. They want to get as far away from these problems
as possible. The sea becomes a popular means of escape.
Finally, young people are naturally advantageous. They love to explore new places. They enjoy the
excitement that comes with this. By working on a ship, they are able to travel far and wide. Besides, food and
lodging on board are free. Thus, many young men are attracted to maritime professions.
34. According to the text, why do young men try to find a job on the sea?
    a. They are good at swimming.
    b. They couldn’t find any job on the land.
    c. They want to try to live on ship.
    d. They graduated from sailing school
    e. They want to be different from other young men
35. What is the main idea of paragraph 4?
    a. An intense of working on ship
    b. The condition of working on ship
    c. The feeling of love toward the sea.
    d. Running away from daily routines.
    e. Running away from problem at home

This following text is for question 20 to 22 A Mangrove Trees A mangrove is a tropical marine tree or shrub of the genus Rhizopora. Mangroves have special aerial roots and salt-filtering tap roots that enable them to thrive in brackish water (brackish water is salty, but not as salty as sea water). There are several species of mangrove trees found all over the world. Some prefer more salinity, while others like to be very close to a large fresh water source (such as a river). Some prefer areas that are sheltered from waves. Some species have their roots covered with sea water every day during huge tide. Other species grow on dry land, but are still part of the ecosystem. Mangroves need to keep their trunk and leaves above the surface of the water. Yet they also need to be firmly attached to the ground, so they are not moved by waves. There are three types of mangrove roots that play an important role for it. 1. Support roots which directly pierce the soil 2. Level-growing roots which twist upwards and downward, with the upward twist emerging on the water surface. 3. Level-growing roots whose downward twists (sub-roots) appear on the water surface.
