We report infrared studies of the insulator-to-metaltransition (IMT) in GaAs doped with eithermagnetic (Mn) or nonmagnetic acceptors (Be).We observe a resonance with a naturalassignment to impurity states in the insulatingregime of Ga1−xMnxAs, which persists across theIMT to the highest doping (16%). Beyond the IMTboundary, behavior combining insulating andmetallic trends also persists to the highest Mndoping. Be-doped samples, however, displayconventional metallicity just above the critical IMTconcentration, with features indicative oftransport within the host valence band.
