  • From day one, we’ve listened carefully to our customers to ensure the content and tools we offer foster innovation in the engineering community   Knovel’s product development is driven by customer feedback collected through customer meetings, surveys, and focus groups. We also work closely with our Design Partners, including some of our largest clients, to verify and test user requirements and features.
  • We continually talking to engineers to understand what they need to do their jobs more effectively. We work with high-level editorial board to understand trends, and they help is to prioritize content aggregation opportunities. On a granular level, we seek to understand pressures of engineers. We learn via renewal surveys, our highly vocal customer base, etc. We follow up on requests for content. We interview engineers as we develop new subject areas to find out what is useful, needed. We tap our publishing partner network- find out what content is new and add content that is successful.
  • And several of these engineers are editors of world-renown engineering textbooks such as James Bralla, editor of Design for Manufacturability James Speight, editor of Lange’s Handbook of Chemistry
  • Engineers & Scientists use more than books
  • Confirm Qualification Info Company XXX is a company of XXX size operating in XXX industry. [Possibly division/department info] . And there are XXX engineers working in organization. Challenges You need to X,Y, Z X, Y, Z isn’t working well What else are you facing?

    2. 2. Our Vision 2
    3. 3. Product Development via Continuous Customer Feedback Customer feedback is an integral part of Knovel’s product design - Obtained via customer meetings, surveys, focus groups & Design Partners Ease-of-use and taking our product performance to new heights are priorities
    4. 4. Content Selection: Identify TrendsKnovel values customer & partner feedback Interview Engineers Determine content & features that have most impact on their work. Listen to Customers Determine needs, trends. Leverage Publisher and Society Partners 100+ Content partners Discuss growth of specific lists and new areas of expansion in their content sets. 4
    5. 5. Content Selection: Prioritizing OpportunitiesEditorial Advisory Board Industryexperts and academic leaders work with us to develop content strategy and to prioritize new opportunities.Adel Sedra, PhD Jack Mattingly, PhDDean, Faculty of Engineering Professor EmeritusUniversity of Waterloo Seattle UniversityJames Speight, PhD James G. 6. 6. Search and Interactive Content Optimized for Engineers Knovel’s search functionality is optimized for engineers. Users can easily find data hidden in tables, graphs, and equations. Users can search numeric ranges and use multi-variable search. Knovel’s sophisticated search ensures that content can be found – and finding translates into using. In many schools Knovel is the most used engineering reference source. Knovel offers over 100,000 interactive graphs, tables, and equations that can be manipulated, analyzed and incorporated into an engineers workflow. Users seek answers to technical questions, not specific ebooks. Knovel facilitates discovery. The ability to query Knovel’s extensive collection of engineering resources to find answers quickly, along with the ability to interact with data that would otherwise be static, exceeds the value of a collection of ebooks.
    7. 7. 1000’s of new Interactive Tables, Graphs, EquationsEngineers Save Time Using Knovel Mechanical properties data for smarter design decisions in product design Corrosiondata, case studies and coatings information to avoid costly structure failures. . . And more 7
    8. 8. Why Having Reliable, Readily-Available Data is Important to Practicing Engineers Toinform material selection in product design for aerospace, equipment, industrial construction Tostreamline decision making in process design and scale up in process industries “In the past, Knovel has helped me find“I cannot tell you how many times I have physical property data that allowed me to used the Knovel resources to gather correctly specify equipment. Without the physical data and information about data, the equipment would have been larger reactivity on different chemicals! What is and less efficient. This saved both initial available to the public on the internet installation cost and lowered continued does not compare, particularly when operation costs.” seeking citable data.” 8
    9. 9. Why Having Reliable, Readily-Available Data is Important to Engineering Students Employers expect engineering students to enter the workforce withskills that enable them to make contributions from day one. Studentswho are familiar with tools and resources that are used by globalengineering firms have a competitive advantage over their peers whodo not. UsingKnovel, students learn how to research, problem-solve, andprepare for a competitive workforce by using the same tools andtrusted information used by engineers at more than 300 leadingcompanies worldwide. Students“go online” to find answers to everything. Google andWikipedia require a critical eye to determine credibility and patienceto review a deluge of search results. Knovel’s search functionality isoptimized for engineering. Results are precise, and the information, from trusted sources, has already been vetted. 9
    10. 10. Why Having Reliable, Readily-Available Data is Important to Engineering Librarians With Knovel, you can maximize your limited resources by making an efficient engineering information purchase. Knovel proactively curates its content by working with network of engineering experts with technical depth that help us to fine tune our offering across 29 subject areas. Knovel offers 29 subject areas from which you can carefully choose topics most relevant to your patrons. You can select the subjects that best align with the interests of your users. Knovel’s subscription model provides the freedom to add new content and adjust to meet the evolving needs of your patrons. Knovel encourages customers to recommend new content and has a formal internal content review team responsible for reviewing customers’ requests. 10
    11. 11. Why Having Reliable, Readily-Available Data is Important to Engineering Faculty Professorscan use interactive content as part of their arsenal of teaching tools to provide students with a wide array of problems to solve. Witha variety of tools and sources, professors can check their students’ understanding of course material and create a deeper knowledge of core principles. The learning curve for using interactive content is short, particularly for “digital native” students. 11
    12. 12. Filling Market Gap: Unpublished DataBuilding on engineers feedback and years of experience, Knovel is: Expanding data to better satisfy customer needs Compiling and designing more of the data that don’t fit in handbooksBeginning in 2012, Knovel is offering exclusive, interactive datasets in Existing Subject Areas Properties for optical and filter glasses in Optics and Photonics subject area Mechanical properties of light alloys in Metals and Metallurgy subject area The largest bank of correlations in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering subject area Properties of commercially available crude oils in Oil and Gas Engineering subject area And more to come … 12
    13. 13. User Feedback “A one stop resource for many types of data that I can utilize. I dont waste time contacting manufacturers reps or the “Knovel makes available technical internet doing a search.” information which is necessary and pertinent to the work [our company] performs everyday. Having information like this available for reference helps [our company’s] technical knowledge base grow - lending to turning out a better product to the clients satisfaction.” “One search of Knovel provided me with information which I and othersEquations had been looking for. If I had looked here before, it would have saved me months of work. The company is employing external consultants to find the information I found here in 30 minutes.”
