    • Vice-President: Calvin Coolidge
    • Gone were the days of Wilson and Idealism!
    • Harding promised:
      • Lower Taxes
      • Higher Tariffs
      • Restrictions on immigration
      • Aid to farmers
    “ A return to NORMALCY”
    • Harding appointed some very qualified people to his administration. However, he also appointed several less qualified people from his home state of Ohio who eventually engaged in a host of corrupt activities for personal gain.

    • Teapot Dome Scandal….
    • Harding’s Secretary of the Interior, Albert Fall gained control of the government oil fields…
    • Problem?
    • Fall had been given $125,000 and hundreds of thoroughbred cattle from the oil companies. He was found guilty of
    • Fall was the first cabinet member to be convicted of a crime while in office.
    Secretly leased them to oil co. Bribery & Spent 1 year in Jail !!!
  • Pres. Calvin Coolidge
    • Harding’s death in 1923 brought Coolidge to the presidency.
    • In 1924, Americans voted to
    • Coolidge’s business policy was laissez faire :
    • Between 1921and 1929 the output of industry nearly Doubled
    “ Keep cool with Coolidge” Government stays out
  • “ Silent Cal” The business of America is…. BUSINESS!!!!
    • Congress was controlled by the Republican party
    • Did everyone benefit from Coolidge’s business policies?
        • No, farmers and unionized workers saw their standard of living drop
    Coolidge did not run again opening the door for Herbert Hoover
  • Herbert Hoover Hoover was a self-made man who had made his first million before he was 40 I believed in rugged Individualism!!!
    • Hoover personified the Republican
    • Party whose strength lied in….
    • Small-town America
    • Midwest was the heartland
    • White
    • Protestant voters
