9. 9. We Are a Team
Resources for business planning & start-up
Academic excellence in research
Product prototyping capabilities
Angel Investors & access to VC’s/other
Doctors to test ideas, maybe invest
Clinical trials & animal facilities
Can always do more.
10. 10. But No One is Perfect
Continue to work on “silos”
Academic research focus
Industry product focus
Clinical innovation incentives
University spin-off
Reduce barriers to accessing resources
Red tape (call Ted & Gord?)
Differing mandates (IMTI, OCE, Western)
Improve cooperation between companies
Ongoing physician involvement
11. 11. Industry Perspective (SME)
When can I get back to work?
Where can I get this made?
Why do I pay more than a University-based business?
Where can I test it?
Who will be my product champion?
How long before I can have something approved to sell?
12. 12. The Funding Gap
How to bridge the “gap” between Angel funding and VC or Big MedTech alliances?
Working prototypes
Proof of concept
Proof of “sellability”
Strong intellectual property
This is where communities need to focus to grow our <25 employee SME’s
13. 13. Rapid Prototyping Facilities
We have the core capabilities in London:
Western Nanofabrication facility open for industry access
IMTI facility experts in laser, materials and molding
Animal care facility and veterinary services
Teaching hospital & clinical trials
Surgical Training
14. 14. Make it Easier
For next steps, every community needs to make resources easier to access
Cut the red tape
Recognize that what is good for the community is good for each organization
Leave something on the table whether that is industry surcharges, royalties, NDA’s
Commercialization vs. Research – students need to learn how to make real products as well as create technological breakthroughs
15. 15. Ongoing Community Involvement
Surgeon/customer interaction
Product Champions
Preferred access to SME’s
Link the relevant resources through one access point:
Ideas => Prototype => Testing => Trials
Result: Improved Innovation Performance
16. 16. Don’t Wait
Many excellent provincial and national efforts in progress.
Let’s not wait to follow a new process
Lead The Process instead!
