    4. Jason Stevens is an accomplished OD Consultant, Trainer and Marketing professional and owner / founder of Ican Development Ltd. Previous to this, Jason was Head of Learning and Development for a large, nationally recognised food retailer. Having spent the last 15 years within the field of Training and Development, Jason has a real passion for education and learning. In a nutshell his career runs from his early years in the Royal Navy as an Electrical Engineer specialising in Weapon’s Systems to Retail Management, various training and development roles, Organisation Development and Marketing. In all of his roles Jason has believed passionately in getting the best out of people to achieve better results... and this all starts with ensuring everyone has the capability and confidence to do a great job. Ican specialise in the development of Leadership and Management capability... A need which is becoming more important in today's economic and competitive climate. The philosophy behind Ican is to break away from the stuffy world of “Teach and Tell” type training and be more facilitative in helping learners to learn for themselves. This is achieved through the design and delivery of development solutions which Involve, Challenge And Nurture (which is where the positive name of ICAN comes from). Jason believes in a learner centred approach with 100% focus being placed on the learner rather than making the life of the trainer easier. He is an advocate of brain friendly learning and has even banned PowerPoint in the past to create a more learner centred approach. Ican offer a number of solutions to help organisations achieve more through their people. By working closely with clients Jason aims to understand the real issues before suggesting improvements. Through Ican, Jason offers a training design and delivery portfolio covering all the areas of Management and Leadership that you would typically find in the Business / Management sections of a quality bookstore. Some programmes and development solutions are endorsed by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) and Jason is licensed and accredited to facilitate and deliver various diagnostics relating to behaviour/personality, Leadership impact /effectiveness and Organisational Culture. • Here are our clients current top 5 needs
      • Business Coaching
      • Leadership Effectiveness
      • Performance Management
      • Managing Change
      • Improving Teamwork and Service – (PTO for info on how we do it...)
    8. Talk! It’s easy... Just... ask @ icandevelopment.co.uk
      • Here’s some examples of how we can help...
      • Business Coaching
      • Forget training courses – we can train your people to coach others to achieve goals, improve skills and performance. We deliver various programmes that can be accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management.. Business coaching can be a very cost effective way to improve business results
      • Leadership Effectiveness
      • The next 18 months looks certain to test the leadership skills of all. We offer some great courses but through Ican you can also measure the effectiveness and development needs of your leaders through the use of some powerful measurements and diagnostics including Personal Effectiveness, Leadership Impact and 360 degree feedback...and of course we’re licensed and accredited to use them
      • Performance Management
      • Failure to deal with basic behaviour and attitude problems. It’s amazing how our clients managers shy away from having tough discussions and giving negative feedback when required... And when it comes to motivating and engaging employees there’s still a lot to do. We have some innovative ways to help mangers overcome these challenges
      • Managing Change
      • Now is the time to change in order to survive. But bringing people with you can be frustrating to say the least. We help your people to understand the need for change. We help them to accept that change is natural process and we all go through similar stages of acceptance. We eventually transform people into change champions who see change as continuous improvement and not a disaster waiting to happen
      • Improving Teamwork and Service
      • This is a big subject to cover in a couple of lines and seeing as we have run out of space, why not email us at the top of this page
    9. In Partnership with the I nstitute of L eadership and M anagement “ Ican has been both creative and innovative in putting together professional Development Programmes around the topic of Business Coaching. These programmes have been approved by The Institute of Leadership and Management who are a Management Awarding Body. ILM has, and is proud to be associated with such innovation and creativity and endorse the Manager as Coach programmes with enthusiasm” Gill Breeze – ILM Business Manager for Wales
    10. Ican help your business to SOAR Well find out your situation by asking you questions and not telling you what we think before even listening... Finding out what you need rather than want... Well discuss some cost effective Options... so you have a choice about what to do...how ... and when...and then we’ll guide you based on our experience You’ll be clear on what actions we are taking but also what actions the learners are taking back in the workplace... We’ll measure the results and show you where we have made improvements to the business and people involved... Simple!
    11. Ican... Develop differently CREATIVE LEARNING
    12. Ican...Keep it simple... Why confuse?
    13. TM Seminars and Workshops – New Book Launching May 2009
        • “ ICAN GROW PEOPLE is a great place to be if you want to make effective management a simple process to understand and act upon. After 18 months of research and the creation of ICAN GROW PEOPLE , 2009 is going to be Green Fingered! ”
      Jason Stevens
        • “ I have spent many years in Training and Development helping, guiding and supporting managers to “transform” themselves into better managers... I have trained, facilitated, mentored and coached.
        • Making the learning stick and easy to apply back in the workplace has always been the biggest challenge.
        • That was until I linked People Management with Gardening Management.”
“ Rather than getting bogged down in theoretical management gobbledygook, I focused on practical, pragmatic steps to becoming a more effective manager which is delivered in a fun and light way without missing or skimming over powerful messages. ” “ By delivering these Gardening / Management workshops I have never known a more effective and memorable way to get managers to understand their role and the impact they have on people to achieve results and business success. ”
    14. TM New Book, Website & Seminars – Launching May 2009
      • How the metaphor works...
          • Gardening – relates to the skills and practices of essential Management
          • Garden – relates to the arena in which you manage
          • Plant(s) – relates to the person or people that you manage
          • Gardener – relates to The Manager
          • Head Gardener – relates to the boss of the Manager
Performance Management Communication Training and Supporting Management Style / Climate Team Development Reward and Recognition Change Recruitment / Selection Motivation Setting Objectives Time Management Personal Effectiveness Delegating Customer Care Seminars cover
    15. “ A gardener’s behavioural style is one of nurture for the plant balanced with a strong desire to complete tasks and achieve results – Results that were planned way in advance... ...that’s just like good management of people.” “ Gardeners accept that mistakes will be made and blame themselves before blaming the plant. They seek to understand what went wrong and try a different approach next time .” “ Gardeners are not afraid to deal with underperformance... ...that means offering support and care for weak plants and sometimes getting rid of plants to make way for ones that will perform better or achieve more in the garden.” “ Gardeners prevent / get rid of slugs and pests at the earliest opportunity. Anything that takes the motivation to grow and do the best away from a plant needs to be dealt with...prevention is better than cure... but sometimes the only option is to put down some slug pellets or spray some pesticide and nip the situation in the bud.” “ Gardeners lay paths for direction and order... they help the gardener to see what is going on and make all plants easily accessible.” “ Gardeners have a succession of plants to replace plants who have wilted, died (or even been stolen). Plants are grown from seeds, cuttings taken from established plants and the best plants bought from the Garden Centre... There is a continuous succession of new chlorophyll coming through. A good garden has no gaps.” “ They say that a natural gardener has “green fingers” so, some managers suit the role of management better than others. Some managers are natural at it, some managers try really hard to develop the skills and apply the knowledge (and do get there over time), and some of these do it more quickly than others. Some managers have no interest, the wrong motivation or don’t get it - not at all. For me, the “can’t garden and won’t garden brigade” should consider doing something else. There are thousands of other choices and things to do - one of those will be a talent, a gift and something they will be very successful at but also enjoy doing.” Extracts from Jason Stevens - Ican Grow People Seminars
      • The Induction Greenhouse is a special place in the garden where new seeds and plants spend their first few days and weeks. It’s their welcome to the garden.
        • In the Induction Greenhouse new seeds and plants are protected from the “real climate” outside in the Big Garden!
        • No negative people, stormy weather, climate change or garden politics!
        • Think back to inductions you have had.. Were you nurtured in the induction greenhouse or just thrown in the garden? What are your memories? Good, bad or ugly?
        • Great gardeners place extreme importance on the Induction greenhouse... In a garden its a make or break time!
        • Give your company Induction Greenhouse plenty of time, care and attention. Dedicate time, resources and your golden touch.
          • How often will you get involved or just “pop in” to see how things are going?
        • Mix new plants with others in the same seed tray – create a sense of Induction unity!
        • Temperature check often – ventilate when it’s too hot and keep warm if they feel a bit left out in the cold.
        • Ensure people grow comfortably within the boundaries of their seed tray... Let them know where and how they are adding value, even at this early stage of their development.
        • Label them – so you know who they are, what they will do, where they will go and who they will be with etc... Know the label without having to read it. A new person in your department won’t feel great if you struggle to remember their name and strain yourself looking for a glimpse of their name badge. If great gardeners can learn all their plants names in English as well as Latin then surely you can remember Rod, Jane and Freddy in the seed tray on the second shelf!
        • Too rosy a picture? – don’t waste all that effort.
          • Don’t paint too rosy a picture about the garden before they leave the greenhouse. The peat bed in the greenhouse is loose, warm and moist and ideal for root growth to help the plant become stable. However, quite often the peat is replaced by hard clay when in the main part of the garden. The attention drops... Watering is sparse and the roots battle against the clay. Plants try to survive and do the best with what they’ve got. Plants will eventually die and people will eventually leave.
      • Creating Garden and Business Paths
      • Create your business paths...
        • Paths have many uses. They can help you get to where you need to be, they provide choices regarding direction or progress, they can provide order along with structure, they help you to explain the garden as a whole or in its component parts.
      • Paths should always...
        • Show where we are now... Where we are going and by what route?
        • Help people to see as far ahead as possible and be clearly signposted along the route. People like to know how far they’ve gone and how much further there is to go.
        • Be simple to follow and clear from barriers and obstructions. Make it really easy to progress on the path. Remove barriers such as big rocks, fill in deep puddles and provide bridges to get across fast flowing streams and rivers . What are the barriers and streams in your business?
        • Be constructed from something that is easy to move forward on. Walking through mud is much harder than walking on concrete.
        • Be interesting – good paths always have points of interest along the route to keep engagement, excitement and anticipation high.
        • Have some clear and basic rules about who can go on the path – On my local woodland path is a sign that reads “No Cyclists” this could easily be no “Cynicalists” (negative and energy sapping people) on my business “Values and Behaviours “ path. Or, to make it more positive, turn it around and have rules about who would be welcome on the path. ..”Positive people welcome!”
      • Some paths you may wish to consider are;
      • The vision path – where this business is going
      • The strategy path – how this business is going to get there
      • The purpose path – objectives and meaningful work that plants can fulfil
      • The values and behaviours path – the way we do things around here
      • The training path – where and how you can grow
      • The career path – where and how you can progress
      • The talent / high potential path - a short cut or fast track to improving skills
      • The exit path - for when something or somebody needs to leave the garden
Extracts from Jason Stevens - Ican Grow People – New Book – May 2009
      • Removing slugs and pests = follow a process
        • Remove temptation – Isolate or verbal warning
        • Jam Jar Trap – Written warning
        • Beer Trap – Final written warning
        • Slug Pellets – Dismissal
        • Most ethical gardeners know not to go in too hard at the beginning by relying on preventative measures rather than death by chemical warfare!
Creative concepts are delivered in experiential ways with plenty of visual stimulus during the event and to take back to the workplace. Extracts from Jason Stevens - Ican Grow People – New Book – May 2009 0700 345 1 789 [email_address]
      • Types of watering / communication
        • Spray - Refreshing and perks up a plant – short and quick communication that is to the point and has a short term impact – it’s like giving feedback, praise and recognition
        • Watering can – Focused communication that targets the individual plant an d can be controlled to give just the right amount on communication. It’s like a good 1:1 discussion with great dialogue
        • Hose – Soaks a large number of plants in one go but may give some plants more communication than they need and other plants not enough – it’s like a mass email
        • Sprinkler - Saturates all plants and wastes water – probably gives too much information or information that is not relevant to the people concerned – relate this to a lot of the corporate communication. For example emails sent to the whole organisation, most of the stuff put on notice boards
        • Water features – Communication that has no impact on the plants - this is the nice to look at but no substance communication like some company magazines that are not in touch with their people
