SUMMARY OF THE DOCTORAL THESIS

The starting point of the Hypothesis of this Ph.D. Thesis is that “Basque Geographies” as a whole behave with clear Structural Dysfunction and Contradictions. The bottom line Aim is to propose a Theoretical Construct to be known as the Basque City so as to be able to analyze the social, territorial, cultural and business reality from the perspective of Social Innovation in order, thereby, to establish a Systemic-Prospective Approach serving to overcome the present scenario, characterized by Social Fragmentation and Complexity. We show that the “Basque Geographies” are presently unavoidably heading towards a City-Region reality. Basque City as Basque City-Region is the formula of a natural backbone, non-traumatic and open, which hosts all kinds of Ideological Strategies and Projects within.
To this end:
(1) The Theoretical Construct is Desconstructed, Re-elaborated and Defined based on Bernardo Atxaga´s original formula of the Basque City, recovering the precise meaning of the term (thus avoiding “contaminated” interpretations that may have been made and by which the term has been popularized in excess, more often than not, negatively rather than positively).
(2) The End Result of this Ph.D. Thesis is the Elaboration/Development of a Systemic-Prospective Approach. It operationalizes the Basque City level beyond the utopia/ideal realm, structured in 4 Systems and 12 Structuring Factors. The 4 Systems are:
a. URBS: Urban System.
b. CYBER: Relational System.
c. CIVITAS: Socio-Cultural System.
d. POLIS: Socio-Political System.
