POWER QUALITY ENHANCEMENT
IN AUTONOMOUS MICROGRID
USING ANT COLONY OPTIMIZATION

To analyze & improve the Power Quality of Microgrid.
Voltage, Frequency regulation and Power Sharing are the
main performance parameters.
Ant Colony Optimization is an intelligent searching
algorithm that is applied for real-time self-tuning of the
Power control parameters.
Microgrid – Cluster of Distributed Generation (DG)
Units that are interfaced with Electrical Distribution
network using Power Electronic devices.
It is also defined as “Subsystem of Distributed Energy
Sources & their Associated Loads”

Seems Distributed Storage Energy System
Higher Operating Efficiency, Lower Emission level
Fuel Cells, PV Cells, Batteries, Micro turbine, Wind

Here Micro sources are connected to the Grid.
They share the loads in Grid
Bypass switch open – Autonomous Mode
Micro Sources feed system responsible for Nominal Voltage &
Frequency , Stability, when Power is Shared by Generation
Grid connected to Islanding mode Change of loads

ACO – Natural behavior of Ant- develops mechanisms
of co-operation and learning

developed by Dorigo & Stutzle in 1992

Ants (blind) go through the food while laying down
Shortest path is discovered via pheromone trails
each ant moves at random (first)
pheromone is deposited on path
Shorter path, more pheromone rails (positive feedback
ants follow the intense pheromone trails
CONCLUSION & FUTURE WORK
Proposed controller shows excellence response
simulation results validated that the Power quality enhancement
Future enhancement is to carry out “Analysis of Harmonics” in
autonomous microgrid using ACO algorithm.
