  • 2. Literary Elements Let’s identify these elements in the story you read: “Rikki-tikki-tavi”
  • 3. Characters Who is the protagonist, the main character?  Rikki-tikki-tavi How would you describe him?  Brave  Smart  Curious  Fast
  • 4. Characters Who is the antagonist? Who opposes the protagonist?  Nag/Nagaina How are they described in the story?  Evil  Dangerous  Protective (of each other and eggs)

  • 6. Setting Where did the story occur?  In and around a large bungalow in Segowlee, India When?  The time period is not directly told to us in the story, but it can be inferred that it took place some time during the British colonization of India
  • 7. Conflict Types of Conflict  Man vs. Man (Creature vs. Creature)  External conflict between two like beings; hero vs. villain  Man vs. Nature  External conflict between a character and forces of nature  Man vs. Society  External conflict between a character or characters and social traditions/concepts  Man vs. Self  Internal conflict between a character and his own will, confusion, or fears; self-discovery; redemption
  • 8. Conflict What is the conflict in this story?  The cobras want to regain control and superiority in the garden and plan to do so by killing the family and then Rikki. Rikki wants to protect himself and the family by killing the snakes. What type is this?  Man vs. Man (or rather Creature vs. Creature)
  • 9. WHAT HAPPENS THAT CAUSES RIKKI-TIKKI-TAVI TO GO LIVE WITH TEDDY AND HIS FAMILY? A flood washes Rikki out of his home. Basic situation, because it is at the very beginning of the story
  • 10. WHOSE BABY GETS EATEN BY NAG? Darzee’s.
  • 11. WHAT HAPPENED TO KARAIT? Rikki killed Karait in the garden
  • 12. WHAT PROBLEM DID RIKKI FACE? DID HE SETA GOAL? Rikki felt the need to protect the family and the other garden animals; Rikki knows that he needs to kill Nag and Nagaina
  • 13. WHAT HAPPENS THAT HELPS OR HINDERS THEMAIN CHARACTERS IN RESOLVING THE CONFLICT?· Darzee and his wife tell Rikki that Nag had eaten one of their eggs; Nag andNagaina try to kill Rikki.· Rikki guards the house and discovers Nag and Nagaina are planning to kill thefamily.· Rikki kills Nag, but knows that there’s more to do· Nagaina tries to kill the family, but Darzee’s wife warns Rikki· Rikki uses Nagaina’s last egg to distract her· Nagaina grabs the egg and dives into the rat hole· Rikki bites onto her tail and follows her into the hole and kills her, but all ofthe garden animals think that Rikki will surely die (climax).· Rikki surprises the garden animals by appearing and announcing hisvictory (Resolution).
  • 14. Summary:This story takes place in the Segowleecantonment in India. Rikkitikki-tavi, a mongoose, fought against Nag andNagaina, two cobras who threatened the familyand the animals that live in their garden.Chuchundra, a timid muskrat gave him advice.Darzee, the tailorbird, also helped him. Rikki-tikki was the real hero because he plannedcarefully and cooperated with Darzee’s wife tokill Nagaina. When the story ends, the animalsand the English family are safe, and they allrejoice.
  • 15. Theme A theme is the main idea or message conveyed by the piece What were the central ideas of the story?  Courage – The story emphasized the courage of Rikki and contrasted that with the cowardice of Chuchundra the muskrat  Loyalty – Rikki displays loyalty towards the family as well as to his duty as a mongoose  Survival – Survival is the motivating factor behind the actions of all characters involved. Even the cobras killed only for food and to protect their way of life.
  • 16. Foreshadowing Foreshadowing occurs when future events in a story are suggested by the author before they actually happened. For example, in “Rikki-tikki-tavi”:  "Hell do no such thing," said the father. "Teddys safer with that little beast than if he had a bloodhound to watch him. If a snake came into the nursery now--"  The statement by the father foreshadows the conflict with Nag and Nagaina that occurs later in the story
