  • 1. MET212- Fluid Mechanics & Machines st1 Semester, December 2011 ASSIGNMENT # 3 10Name…… ……… ……… …… ………… I.D No.…….… ………Due date … … … Section …………Q.3.1 Water flows through a horizontal pipe at a rate of 1 gal/s. The pipe consists of two sections (1&2) of diameters 4 inches and 2 inches with a smooth reducing section. The pressure difference between the two pipe sections is measured by a mercury manometer. Neglecting frictional effects, calculate the differential height of mercury manometer attached to the two pipe sections.Dr. Adel Afify MET 212 1
  • 2. Q.3.2 The water flow rate in a pipe is determined by use of the Venturi meter shown in Figure. Using the information given in the figure (pipe and throat diameter are respectively 10 cm and 6 cm) and h= 4cm, calculate the flow rate assuming uniform flow and no losses. Expressed results in US gal/min (gpm), ρ water=1000kg/m3. 2
  • 3. Q.3.3 Gasoline flows from a 0.3 m diameter pipe in which the pressure is 300 kPa into a 0.15 m diameter pipe in which the pressure is 120 kPa. If the pipes are horizontal and the viscous effects are negligible, determine the flowrate of the pipe. ( γ gasoline= 6.67x103 N/m3 and g = 9.81 m/s2). Pipe (0.3 m dia) 3
  • 4. Q.3.4 A venturi meter with a 150 mm at inlet and 100 mm diameter at throat is laid with its axis horizontal and is used for measuring the flow of oil SG 0.91. The oil and mercury differential manometer shows a head difference of 200 mm. Assume coefficient of discharge of the meter as 0.98. Calculate the discharge rate in liters per minute. ( γ water= 103 x 9.81N/m3 and g = 9.81 m/s2). 4
  • 5. Q.3.5 A pitot tube is inserted in a pipe of diameter is 24mm to measure the velocity of water flowing on it. If the water rises the tube is 200mm find the velocity of water flow and discharge in literes/s. 5
