The mobile lifecycle

   • Strong demand by LoB
   • Higher expectations of user experience
     with mobile apps
   • Lack of best practices guidance on
     how to deliver mobile applications
   • More direct involvement from
     users/stakeholders in design
   • Native programming models are
     not portable across devices.
   • Highly fragmented set of mobile
     devices and platforms
   • Very large number of configurations
of devices, platforms, carriers, etc. to test
   • Mobile landscape evolves at a much faster
     pace
   • More frequent releases and updates for apps
     with more urgent time-to-market demands

Editor's Notes

  1. Key message: Computing continues to extend it’s reach and mobile is the latest extension to become fully embedded in the fabric of enterprise IT. But it does bring with it some unique characteristics. From a business perspective it is really transforming and creating new business models. These models must adapt to consumer mobile expectations and work on the end consumer’s own private deviceMobile apps have much faster lifecycles and they are much more iterative than traditional applicationsAnd there is a high degree of fragmentation of devices, networks, and languages, etc. that is forcing movement toward open standards.
  2. The mobile space presents large and varied opportunities for our customers including the business-to-enterprise benefits to an organization of increasing worker productivity, improving processing times, and efficiencies gained through extending existing applications to mobile workers and customers. In addition, mobile offers opportunities in the business-to-consumer or B2C space with benefits such as improved customer satisfaction, opportunities to deepen customer engagement and drive increased sales and levels of customer service allowing them to differentiate themselves.
  3. More About the Customer Examples:ING Direct CanadaHere we have an example of how a leading financial institution is reaching mobile banking customers with IBM software and services. ING Direct Canada launched a mobile banking application and a mobile banking website based on WebSphere Application Server. In doing so the bank was quickly able to build and operate the application that runs on iPhone, iPad and BlackBerry, providing mobile access to key banking features for ING Direct customers. IBM GBS worked with ING Direct on this project. The solution extends the ING DIRECT Canada transactional Web infrastructure based onIBM WebSphere Application ServerIBM Rational Application Developer 7.5 and Rational Software Architect 7.5See the ComputerWorld article for more background http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9178145/ING_Direct_praises_IBM_s_Websphere_for_role_in_its_mobile_banking_appConcord HospitalConcord Hospital is a long-time BigFix / Endpoint Manager customer who has deployed nearly every solution we offer, actively participated in customer advisory councils, and Beta programs. They have used Endpoint Manager on desktops, servers, laptops, and mobile hospital computers. They are currently Beta testing our mobile OS offering, but of course have not bought it at this time, though they have been highly complimentary of the solution.WimbledonIBM and Wimbledon are creating an increasingly reliable, secure and responsive infrastructure to keep pace with a global, grand slam tournament and help to provide a firm foundation for innovation. New developments include the IBM Seer with Video, an augmented reality phone application which acts as an onsite, realtime guide and interactive map for Wimbledon and allows users to take live feeds from BBC and other cameras; an iPhone Wimbledon App which transforms how fans keep up with the action; and IBM Seer Aggregator, which enables fans to receive Wimbledon tweets direct to java-enabled phones from a variety of sources including players, commentators and a team of IBM scouts at the event.Solution Components:IBM Global Business Services: Strategy and Change Services; Application Innovation ServicesIBM Global Technology Services: Integrated Technology ServicesIBM WebSphere Application Server; WebSphere Message Broker; WebSphere PortalIBM DB2 Universal DatabaseIBM Storage Area Network

  6. Combining existing capabilities as well as the newly acquired capabilities from Worklight, IBM can now provide our customers with a comprehensive solution for building enterprise mobile applications that connect to backend applications and information systems. Our comprehensive solution allows customers to develop mobile applications using several different programming models (native, hybrid, web). The hybrid and web programming models are inherently cross-platform, allowing the applications to run across the different device ecosystems (e.g. iOS, Android, Blackberry and Windows).Enterprise mobile applications are nearly always multi-tiered applications. Leveraging IBM’s deep expertise in enterprise systems, our mobile development solution and runtime components allow developed applications to optimally integrate with backend applications and information systems. Moreover, IBM Rational’s collaborative lifecycle management capabilities are integrated with the development tools. By governing the development process, customers can accelerate their mobile application development to fulfill fast time-to-market requirements that are typical of mobile applications, and rapidly release new updates to these applications to respond to user demand. Also, by aligning business and technical stakeholders within the lifecycle, customers can deliver applications with high quality user experience that meets business objectives. Key IBM Capabilities in this area:Develop mobile apps (native, hybrid, web)Traceability and collaboration across requirements, code and testingTest across multiple devicesPublish / Package for app storesMobile Software Dev Lifecycle (SDLC) toolsConnect mobile apps with optimized dataIntegrate with enterprise data and appsIntegrate with device capabilitiesPush notifications
  7. In our existing portfolio, IBM has exciting offerings to enable customers to build and connect to their back-end systems. With the acquisition of Cast Iron in May 2010 and the subsequent development and investment in the fit-for-purpose WebSphere Cast Iron Cloud integration, IBM continues to show its thought leadership in Cloud technology.Cast Iron provides a centralized and user-friendly point of management for all integration projects; connecting Public Cloud, Private Cloud or on premise applicationsThe product is committed to its simplified user interface and "configuration, not coding" approach to application integration, enabling jr IT staff, or even business analysts and line of business users to configure, run and manage integration projects, which would otherwise require highly-skilled expertise, long man-hours and high total cost of ownership. This means organizations can easily extend the functionality of their Cloud or on premise systems for consumption on mobile devices, and process data bi-directionallyCast Iron continues its tag-line of "integration in days", taking the complexity out of integration projects and providing a rapid ROI through real-time access to data which would otherwise be siloe'd in disparate systems located across platformsThe flexibility and scalability of this product is evidenced in the ability to templatize best practices in application integration for reuse in future projects, as well as its availability in 3 form factors; a physical or virtual appliance or completely in the multi-tenant Cloud service. With Rational: Rational Collaborative Lifecycle Management implements ALM best practices that accelerate mobile application development.By providing traceability across the entire project lifecycle from inception to delivery, customers can break down siloes between the different practitioner domains (e.g. requirement analysts, developers and testers). This improves collaboration, reduces errors that occur during hand-offs, reduces rework and improves the velocity of progress. With real-time planning that is consistently accurate and up-to-date, customers gain visibility and intelligence into the actual state of project health. This facilitates decision making and allows remedial actions to be identified and implement as soon as possible. These and other lifecycle capabilities such as in-context collaboration and continuous improvement are integrated with mobile development tools both from existing IBM capabilities and Worklight. Indeed, Worklight provides a “Ready for Rational”-certified integration before the acquisition. Customers can store their code on centralized code repositories and perform distributed builds targeting different mobile platforms remotely. In addition, the integration to IBM’s existing test management system can help manage test suites and test cases to ensure the quality of the development applications.
  8. As clients build and deploy ever more sophisticated mobile applications, and do so across multiple platforms, the need for managing and securing those devices only increases. The first step is to achieve full visibility and analytics - how many devices are in my environment? what OS are they running? what apps have they installed? what enterprise resources are they using? what employee groups do they belong to? From there it is possible to develop and implement the right policies across different kinds of devices, uses, and employees. For example, certain groups of employees may come to rely exclusively on mobile devices - besides security, they must have the same level of availability they have today. And of course these tiny devices are easily lost or stolen and frequently replaced, making automated provisioning and employee self-service a must-have. All this must be accomplished within existing budgets - meaning a solution that is scalable and extendable. IBM clients solve this problem by taking a unified device approach across mobile, Point of Sale, kiosk, desktop/laptop, and server environments. Key IBM Capabilities in this area include:Device Analytics and Control Mobile environment analytics Mobile access management & data protection Secure Network Communications & ManagementMobile Lifecycle ManagementEncrypted local device data storageProvisioning & Configuration ManagementPrivate app stores and CatalogsDevice inventory & Policy ManagementMobile Security IntelligenceAdaptive user security  Pt re: Mobile environment analytics • Mobile Lifecycle Management• Device inventory & Policy ManagementMike Gilfix Downloads: 1025 downloads from the open site; 340 were from outside IBMURL: 2922 clicks on the bitly url http://ibm.co/ibmmobiledeveloperWorks: 12,206 visits to the welcome pageForums: 20 open forum threads; 81 messages
  9. Main Point: IBM has delivered on the existing BigFix roadmap, ported existing Tivoli products with complementary capability to this platform, and integrated with our security, service management, and asset management technologies.IBM acquired BigFix in mid 2010 for its unique architecture. This architecture is light weight, highly scalable, and flexible enough to work in any environment. It is also a platform that enables rapid development and integration, In the last 18 months, IBM has completely re-branded the product; delivered on the existing BigFix roadmap; ported Tivoli Remote Control, and Tivoli Provisioning Manager for OS Deployment to this platform; and integrated with IBM Security Server Protection for Windows, IBM Proventia Desktop Endpoint Security, Tivoli Asset Manger for IT, Tivoli Service Request Manager, and Tivoli Change and Configuration Management Database; and supported Trend Micro's integration of Anti-Malware and Data Loss Prevention technologies on the platform. And now we are announcing the extension of support for over 90 OS versions to include four more: iOS, Android, Symbian, and Windows Phone as IBM Endpoint Manager for Mobile Devices. In addition to the advanced management and security capabilities already expected in this category, IBM Endpoint Manager for Mobile Devices inherits the scalability, real-time reporting, and integration points of the BigFix platform. In fact, IBM will be extending its existing 500,000 desktop and laptop deployment to include mobile devices this year.
