Why is it important? As you drive, engine oil breaks down and the oil filter becomes clogged with contaminants. This can take just 3 months or 3,000 miles. Changing your car’s engine oil is one of the most important steps you can take to ensure your car will continue to run well. As always, refer to your service manual for proper maintenance requirements. Thankfully, changing your oil is both easy and fairly inexpensive. What You’ll Need
Ratchet or open-end wrench
Oil filter wrench
Oil Catch / Recycler container
Funnel
New Oil (check service manual for number of quarts needed)
New oil filter
Clean Rag

The first step involves removing the old oil from your car’s engine. This is done by gaining access to the undercarriage the car. Some automobiles allow enough height clearance to crawl under. If not, safely use a jack or tire ramps to gain access. Once under the vehicle, you will notice a relatively large tank with a bolt on the bottom side. That is the oil tank. Place your oil catch or recycle pan under the discharge of the tank. Remove the bolt with your ratchet or opened ended wrench. Be careful not to round the edges of the oil bolt. Once the bolt is removed the oil will begin to flow out into your oil catch or recycle pan.
How to do it….. Engine oil is HOT – If you are inexperienced it is best to remove oil only when the engine is cold.

Now that you have drained all of the oil from your engine, it is time to reapply the oil pan bolt. Screw the bolt back in making sure it is tight. A loose or missing bolt will create an oil leak.

Removing the Oil Filter
Now that you have drained the engine oil and reapplied the oil pan bolt, it is time to change the oil filter. An oil filter does just what it’s name implies – it filters your engine’s oil. You can locate your oil filter under the hood of your car and it is usually within easy access on the side of your engine. Use the oil filter wrench and gently rotate in a counter-clockwise motion. Remove the filter once it is loose. There will be oil in the filter, so drain it into the recycle or oil catch pan under the car.

Applying the New Oil Filter
Now it is time to apply the new oil filter. Screw in the filter by turning it in a clockwise direction. It is important not to over-tighten the filter. Once you feel the filter make contact with the engine, rotate it an additional ¾ turn only.

Adding the New Oil
Locate the oil cap on the top of your engine.
Remove the oil cap and place your funnel into the engine.
Pour the new engine oil into the funnel.
Use the dipstick to ensure the correct amount of oil has been added.
Reapply your oil cap to the engine.
Check under the automobile for any leaks and then start the engine and check for leaks again.

Completing the Task….
Dispose of your old engine oil at a local gas station or auto parts store. Never improperly discard oil in drains or anywhere else it is harmful to the environment.
Take note of the mileage of the automobile and repeat this task every 3 months or 3,000 miles.
