4 Mobile television: 3 essential principles anytime anywhere anything

5 Anytime?  = Watching television every moment of the day  Mobile television as a ‘time killer’ "Ik gebruik het als ik niets te doen heb. Als ik zit te wachten op een vriendin met wie ik heb afgesproken bijvoorbeeld in de stad en ze is een uur te laat. Of als het mooi weer is ergens gaan zitten en televisiekijken in plaats van een boekje te gaan kopen maar, alleen als ik op iemand aan het wachten ben, als verstrooiing." (S. vrouw)  But, also dedicated viewers especially in the evening and at night (GSM) "In de eerste weken heb ik af en toe onder het deken liggen kijken omdat ik bij mijn vriend aan het piekeren was.." (K., vrouw, 36j.) “Voor mij een beetje hetzelfde van wat er allemaal gezegd geweest is: voor het slapengaan. Mijn tv staat niet voor mijn bed maar in een andere kamer, dus heb ik dat enkele keren gebruikt. Vooral voor korte programma’s, informatieve zaken (Man bijt hond achtige dingen). Ik heb één keer geprobeerd een film die aan het bekijken was, voort te kijken op de gsm, maar het was niks.Het zou nuttig kunnen zijn als je op de trein zit, je spoort van Gent naar Brussel of zo, maar nu ging dat nog niet.” (K., man, 26j.)

6 Anywhere?  = Watching mobile television wherever you want  Private places:  Mainly at home (bathroom, kitchen, toilet, garden, bedroom,…)  Friends place, car  Public places:  In the city, public transport (bus, tram, train)  Ohters: waiting room doctor, pay desk shop, café, restaurant, library, …  But  Use in public spaces sometimes limited  Social pressure  Safety

7 Anything?  Same content as traditional television  News and information most important  Series  But:  Different levels of viewing intensity  Short time sessions  Current broadcasting scheme focussed on one "prime time" moment (evening)  No need to see advertisements or unpleasant programs: "Mijn pauze is van twaalf tot één en dan zijn het enkel belspelletjes, dus dat is enorm vervelend." (K., vrouw, 26j.) "Ja, je bent aan het kijken en opeens is er reclame. Naar zo'n reclame kun je nooit blijven kijken. Zo'n reclame duurt 10 minuten en als je 10 minuten naar dat toestelletje zit te kijken dan klap je het liever dicht." (N., man, 33j.)

9 Mobile television as a primary activity  Mobile television as a substitution for traditional television  Primary activity: dedicated viewer  Active  No other television in the neighbourhood  Traditional television occupied: second television at home “Ik zit samen met mijn broer op kot. Ik wou wel tv, maar hij niet omdat hij anders teveel zou afgeleid zijn (niet genoeg karakter). Maar nu vindt hij het heel handig: hij kijkt er nu ook naar: nieuws, sport. En het is geen extra toestel, er is al zo weinig plaats op een kot.” (A., vrouw, 33j.) "De eerste zondag heb in naar NCIS gekeken.En dat was samen met het vrouwken. Dicht tegen elkaar. Omdat we verhuisd zijn hebben we geen kabel, dus we moeten dicht bij elkaar kijken. Natuurlijk dicht bij een stopcontact." (P., man, 39j.)

10 Mobile television as a secondary activity  Mobile television as a gadget and an important ‘time killer’  >Television in the pocket  Recreation while waiting, travelling, … .  Less important then primary activity  Short viewing times  Semi active viewing “Ik vond het ook wel een leuke gadget, maar ik zou het voor mezelf niet rap moeten hebben.” (L., man, 29j.) “Ik denk ook wel dat dat het belangrijkste is, dat je die gsm buitenshuis gebruikt om de tijd te doden. Niet om specifiek naar iets te kijken, dan zit je thuis.” (T., man, 46j.)

11 Mobile television as a tertiary activity  Mobile television as a ‘wall paper’  Secondary activity near cooking, eating, walking, going to the toilet, working on the computer, … .  Passive watching activity  Popular channels: music channels such as JIMtv  Popular program: news “Gisteren heb ik gekeken terwijl ik aan het koken was: ik heb me op een stoel gezet met een pan en deeg en mijn gsm op een bierglas gezet.” (A., vrouw, 47j.) "Het zou niet echt vervangend zijn tegenover een gewone tv, maar eerder ja, zo als extraatje misschien. Ik gebruik het veel als achtergrond als ik op de computer zit te werken of zo. Maar ik zie het niet als vervanger van de gewone tv." (E., vrouw, 24j.)
