  • 2. Aim Get some interest going in a northern semantic web community
  • 3. Plan
    • Jan: Primer – Introductions and Overview
    • Feb: Representation (RDF,RDFa,Microformats) and an In depth look at tools, techniques and platforms.

  • 4. What is the Semantic Web Audience participation #1 What is “The Web”
  • 5. What is the Semantic Web (2) Three Blindfolded men and an elephant!
  • 6. What is the Semantic Web (3) “The Web Done Right” (Sir Tim)
  • 7. What is the Semantic Web (4) “If Web 1.0 was about linking information and Web 2.0 about linking people, the social Web, then Web 3.0 will be about connecting knowledge” (Nicked from the LinkedIn Semantic Web Group)
  • 8. What is the semantic web (5) Lets be a bit more practical and choose an example domain Facebook and Social Networks! Yep, it's audience participation time, How many social network sites can we list all together?
  • 9. What is the Semantic Web (6) (Yesterday) Today - Data is controlled by applications, and each application keeps it to itself. Tomorrow (Today) - Linked web of data “ Machine-Understandable” Documents
  • 10. FOAF – Friend Of A Friend
  • 11. FOAF (2) FoaF is an acronym for Friend of a Friend, an experimental project and vocabulary for the Semantic Web. It is based on the idea of a machine-readable version of the current World Wide Web, with homepages, mailling lists, travel itineraries, calendars, address books and the likes.
  • 12. FOAF (3) In my blog page: <a href=&quot; http://www.k-int.com/ibbo/ibbo-foaf.rdf &quot;> </a> But wait.. whats that in the <head> section? <link href=”http://www.k-int.com/ibbo/ibbo-foaf.rdf” rel=”meta” title=”FOAF” type=”application/rdf+xml” />
  • 13. FOAF – Code Time! <foaf:Person rdf:nodeID=&quot;ianibbo&quot;> <dc:title>Ian Ibbotson's FOAF RDF/XML document</dc:title> <dc:description>Ian ibbotson - Open source software developer doing semantic web and information retrieval in eGovernment, Learning and cultural sector applications - contacts, interests and projects.</dc:description> <foaf:maker rdf:nodeID=&quot;ianibbo&quot;/> <foaf:name>Ian Ibbotson</foaf:name> <foaf:title>Mr</foaf:title> <foaf:givenname>Ian</foaf:givenname> <foaf:family_name>Ibbotson</foaf:family_name> <foaf:nick>ibbo</foaf:nick> <foaf:mbox rdf:resource=&quot;mailto:ianibbo@googlemail.com&quot;/> <foaf:homepage rdf:resource=&quot;http://ianibbo.blogspot.com&quot;/> <foaf:depiction rdf:resource=&quot;http://photos1.blogger.com/x/blogger2/4294/946/240/z/611294/gse_multipart7821.jpg&quot;/> <foaf:phone rdf:resource=&quot;tel:07968-794-630&quot;/> <foaf:workplaceHomepage rdf:resource=&quot;http://www.k-int.com&quot;/> <foaf:msnChatID>ian.ibbotson@k-int.com</foaf:msnChatID> <foaf:yahooChatID>ianibbo</foaf:yahooChatID> <foaf:weblog rdf:resource=&quot;http://ianibbo.blogspot.com&quot;/> <foaf:interest dc:title=&quot;Semantic Web&quot; /> <foaf:interest dc:title=&quot;Educational Cybernetics&quot; /> <foaf:interest dc:title=&quot;General Systems Theory&quot; /> <foaf:knows rdf:nodeID=&quot;paulm&quot;/> </foaf:Person> <foaf:Person rdf:nodeID=&quot;paulm&quot;> <foaf:name>Paul Miller</foaf:name> <rdfs:seeAlso rdf:resource=&quot;http://www.livejournal.com/users/cie_paul/data/foaf&quot;/> </foaf:Person>
  • 14. FOAF – So What? Starting point – Application agnostic model of People, Friends, Interests – Not an application but free to be used in any Application Extensible! RDF Schemas are not like XML schemas (IMNSHO)
  • 15. FOAF - So What? (2) It's not the FOAF Profile itself thats interesting My FOAF profile(s) are hosted wherever I want I can have Multiple FOAF profiles BUT link them - The ability to merge foaf profiles (Forward pointer to merging of graphs, common schema) - Semantic Spiders - Crawl web looking for application/RDF link elements
  • 16. HOMEWORK! Go to http://www.ldodds.com/foaf/foaf-o-matic And create yourself a FOAF profile, then upload it to your blog / website / other resource (Or talk to me about other ways of getting it published) Email me the address of your foaf (ianibbo@googlemail.com) This may be useful for next time!
  • 17. Next Time Subjects, Objects and Predicates RDF RDFa Triple Stores (Sesame) Inference Merging Graphs
  • 18. Keep Talking / Extra Resources http://delicious.com/tag/geekupsheff-semweb (But please add descript ions) http://twemes.com/geekupsheff-semweb http://twitter.com/sheffieldgeeks http://twitter.com/ianibbo (Me) #geekupsheff - Open Conversation Space
