  • On a Mission to Grow the Web of Data
  • On a Mission to Grow the Web of Data
  • There is still not enough data
  • Today the effort of publishing Linked Data far exceeds the payback for data owners
  • We need to reach a critical mass of Linked Data to make publishing sustainable and rewarding
  • The obstacles to publishing: Why shoud I do it? What should my data look like? What tools should I use? How do I know I'm doing it right?
  • Data Incubator seeks to organise community expertise to remove these obstacles
  • Infrastructure
    • Website and use of dataincubator.org subdomains
    • Google code project and mailing list
    • Talis Platform for hosting conversions
    • What else?
  • Community Expertise
    • Modelling data
    • Creating schemas
    • Scraping and conversion scripts
    • Identifying cross linking opportunities
  • Principles
    • dataincubator.org is a temporary host for converted data. The data needs to end up on the original owner's site
    • All code, schemas and data to be freely available (public domain if possible)
    • Use the same tools as the data owner
  • Challenges
    • What datasets are most valuable?
    • How to convince data owners to adopt the work into their processes?
    • How to educate about licensing?
    • How to improve communication and collaboration?
  • Challenges Contd.
    • How to best demonstrate value of Linked Data back to original data owners?
    • How to recruit more volunteers?
