1. INTRODUCTION
The word ‘Bibliometrics’ is derived from the two Greek words ‘biblio’ and ‘metriko’
meaning book and measurement. The word book includes books, Journals and other reading
materials. The word measurement means the application of mathematical and statistical
techniques.
Hence bibliometrics can be defined as the application of mathematical and statistical
techniques to books and other written communication. In other words bibliometrics is the
quantitative analysis of documents or written communication.
Bibliometrics is the subject of recent origin and relatively a new area of study. It
emerged as a research field as part of information science. It is now being vigorously pursued
with the result that a considerable percentage of articles, published in Library and
Information Science are on Bibliometrics and its related topics. It has been found that the
articles on bibliometrics were also published in Social science and Science periodicals.

Bibliometrics has commanded the attention of numerous individuals in library and
information science. The measurement of bibliographic information offers the promise of
providing a theory that will resolve many practical problems. It is claimed that the author
productivity patterns. Literature growth rates and related statistical distributions can be used
to evaluate the authors.
1.1 Telugu
Telugu is a Dravidian language predominantly spoken in the Indian state of Andhra
Pradesh and in Yanam of Union Territory of Puducherry, where it is an official language. It is
also spoken by significant minorities in the states of Chattisgarh, Karnataka, Maharashtra,
Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and in the Union Territory of Puducherry. The five classical languages
of India are Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Sanskrit Among them, stands in third
place for being more Telugu number of native speakers in India, thirteenth in the Ethnologue
list of most-spoken languages worldwide, and is the most widely spoken Dravidian language.
It is one of the twenty-two scheduled languages of the Republic of India. Telugu borrowed
several features of Sanskrit that have subsequently been lost in Sanskrit's daughter languages
such as Hindi and Bengali, especially in the pronunciation of some vowels and consonants.
Telugu is a beautiful language and it is called as ‘Italian of East’.
1.2 SriVenkateswara University
Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, was established in 1954. There are now 58
departments comprising Arts, Sciences, Management, Law, and Engineering with student
strength of 5,500, including research scholars, academic faculty strength of 320, and 1000
non-teaching staff members. The teaching and research work that has been carried out in the
university departments has been considered uniformly high. The university library was
started in 1955 with a small collection of 6,700 books. The library has grown over the years
to its present size and now it has 3.6 lakhs documents to cater to the information needs of
students, research scholars and faculty members.
1.3 Department of Telugu Studies
The Department of Telugu was started in the academic year 1959-60, five years after
the S.V. University was founded. The Department of Telugu later renamed as the Department
of Telugu Studies in 1981, keeping in view of the extensive and wide range of both teaching
and research activities of the Department. The year 1984-85 was the Silver Jubilee year of the
Department. The Department has been providing instruction in M.A. Telugu Language and
Literature. At present, the year intake of students is about 40 for regular students for the
period of two years duration. In addition to teaching M.A. Telugu Course, the department is
actively engaged in doing research also. The Department is running M.Phil., and Ph.D.
courses. The first Ph.D degree has been awarded to Sri J. Suryanarayana in 1964.
2. REVIEW OF LITERATURE
A number of bibliometric studies that have been carried out during the last two
decades were reviewed in the following paragraphs.
Braun, and others (1987)1
presented the total publication output, percentage share of
publication output, percentage of annual change in publication output of various countries.
A number of scientometric analyses have been carried out during the last decades to evaluate
the research productivity of Indian scientists. Bishop et al (2003)2

bibliometric analysis of diabetes literature indexed the MEDLINE database for the period
1995-2004. The study reveals that maximum number of records (13244) was during 2003,
followed by 12,690 in 2002 and 11,061 in 2001. Relative growth rate was found to be
decreasing year wise. Ranking of the journals based on the quantum of research output on
diabetes during 1995-2004 shows that USA in the largest contributor of literature on diabetes
research. The research productivity of diabetes confirms the Bradford’s Law of Scattering.
Jain and Kumar (2011)4
studied the research productivity of Indian Scientists in world
soy a bean research for the period 1989-2008 and found that most of the authors attained the
low dominance factor value. Krishna Reddy (2013)5
studied the research productivity of
Department of Mathematics, Sri Krishnadevaraya University during the years 1976-2011.
The number of Ph.D produced during the above period are 99. The study reveals that a
highest percentage of theses(51.5%) were produced during 2006-2011. Out of 99 theses 28
.3% of them produced under the guidance of Dr. D. R. V. PrasadaRao; most of them (77.8%)
were pertaing to Applied Mathematics; and the majority of the research researchers (69.69%)
in the Department of Mathematics were men. Chidambaram6

The word measurement means the application of mathematical and statistical techniques. Hence bibliometrics can be defined as the application of mathematical and statistical techniques to books and other written communication. In other words bibliometrics is the quantitative analysis of documents or written communication. Bibliometrics is the subject of recent origin and relatively a new area of study. It emerged as a research field as part of information science. It is now being vigorously pursued with the result that a considerable percentage of articles, published in Library and Information Science are on Bibliometrics and its related topics. It has been found that the articles on bibliometrics were also published in Social science and Science periodicals. Krishnamoorthy, and others (2009)3 studied the bibliometric analysis of diabetes literature indexed the MEDLINE database for the period 1995-2004. The study reveals that maximum number of records (13244) was during 2003, followed by 12,690 in 2002 and 11,061 in 2001. Relative growth rate was found to be decreasing year wise. Ranking of the journals based on the quantum of research output on diabetes during 1995-2004 shows that USA in the largest contributor of literature on diabetes research. The research productivity of diabetes confirms the Bradford’s Law of Scattering. Jain and Kumar (2011)4 studied the research productivity of Indian Scientists in world soy a bean research for the period 1989-2008 and found that most of the authors attained the low dominance factor value. Krishna Reddy (2013)5 studied the research productivity of Department of Mathematics, Sri Krishnadevaraya University during the years 1976-2011. The number of Ph.D produced during the above period are 99. The study reveals that a highest percentage of theses(51.5%) were produced during 2006-2011. Out of 99 theses 28 .3% of them produced under the guidance of Dr. D. R. V. PrasadaRao; most of them (77.8%) were pertaing to Applied Mathematics; and the majority of the research researchers (69.69%) in the Department of Mathematics were men. Chidambaram6 opines that research publications mirror the research activities of any organization and a country. Guay7 carried out the qualitative survey of the emergence of organic chemistry research in India during 1907-1926 covered by Chemical Abstraacts. As no study has been conducted on bibliometric analysis of Ph.D awarded theses in Telugu, the present study has been undertaken. 3. OBJECTIVES The objectives of the present study are: a.
