  • Each year, approximately 1.2 million students fail to graduate from high school, more than half of whom are from minority groups. (Editorial Projects in Education, ―Diplomas Count 2008: Diplomas Count 2008. School to College: Can State P–16 Councils Ease the Transition?,‖ special issue, Education Week 26, no. 40 (2008). )
  • In a national survey of HS dropouts…
  • At CAS, these are the stories we hear. Each year we work with over 700 students from over 290 HS from across New York City. We can be either the last school they ever go to, or a defining moment in their life. Through the iZone we’ve taken this challenge and ran with it.
  • Be extending the classroom into the community, students at City-As-School will be prepared with the skills, knowledge, and experience to succeed in college and in life. Going from 400 to 700 plus internships and out of class room learning opportunities.
  • Ideas: tour of the waste facilities of nyc, history of nyc, attend national conferences, study languages abroad, biking advocacy, camping trips, college tours,
  • Life does not resemble a classroom… and as such learning should not be confined to the classroom.

      • We believe that the high school experience should emulate college as closely as possible. Our classes will be different lengths depending on their needs and will not meet every day. Students will have project work time built into their schedules.
      • Through project based learning, we will create an environment where Teachers are Mentors, and Students are Creators. Building on their knowledge of the urban environment, students can serve as co-designers of the curriculum and inform project development.
      • We will create an environment where students can articulate competencies and pursue them through a variety of pathways including courses, collaborative/integrated projects, and individualized projects.
