  1. 1. MPLS( Multi Protocol Label Switching)Presented by: Naouar ilies
  2. 2. OutlineIntroductionLabel SwitchingForwarding TablesForwarding AlgorithmOperation 2
  3. 3. IntroductionMultiProtocol Label Switching (MPLS)a mechanism for data transport.operating on the data link layer(below protocols such as IP).is mainly used to forward IP datagrams and Ethernet traffic. 3
  4. 4. IntroductionMPLS overcomes these limitations:•Brings the intelligence of routing with the performance ofswitching.•Supports VPN.•Supports QoS.•Effective management of bandwidth. 4
  5. 5. Label Switching Decomposition of network layer routing into control and forwarding components. Two sources of information to make a forwarding decision on a packet:- Forwarding table maintained by a Label Switching Router (LSR).- A label carried in the packet. Les routeurs dans le domaine MPLS sont appelés Core Router et Label Switching Routers (LSR) 5
  6. 6. A Label Short, fixed-length entity. With no internal structure. MPLS affecte un label (ou nombre) à chaque paquet et utilise ce label pour le transmettre. Ce label est:- positionné à lentrée du réseau MPLS et est utilisé en interne- utilisé pour faire le chemin vers la destination 6
  7. 7. Label Switching Forwarding Tables 7
  8. 8. Label Switching Forwarding AlgorithmBased on label swapping.LSR receives a packet, the router extracts the label.Uses it as an index (incoming label )in its forwarding table. For each subentry the router replaces the label in the packetwith the outgoing label from the subentry.Sends the packet over the outgoing interface specifi ed by thissubentry to the next hop. 8
  9. 9. Operation•The end routers in the networksearch their routing table, the others use labels only.•A unique label is assigned to each destination in the IP routing table.•It is stored in the table called Label Information Base (LIB).•Locallabels are distributed to neighboring routers for use as next-hop label.Allocation, storage and distribution of labels. 9
