  2. 2. Health care is a $2.8T industry in the U.S., 18% of our GDP and growing
  3. 3. We are looking for disruptors, both inside and outside of government Innovation and disruption are necessary as we undergo the most dramatic transformation in health care since the creation of Medicare and Medicaid in 1965
  4. 4. Health care has been in a dramatic flux, all set in motion by the implementation of the Affordable Care Act
  5. 5. We are now living in a health care system where data is driving change

OPEN DATA EXECUTION PLAN GOALS: Advancing HealthData.gov site Highlighting departmental assets that support achieving HHS strategic initiatives Educating new and existing, internal and external participants Enabling and incentivizing the health data ecosystem Implementing administration and departmental policies that foster openness
  12. 12. LAST 3 YEARS FOCUSED ON LIBERATING DATA Changed the default setting for data from closed to open
  13. 13. HOSPITAL COST DATA CMS released charge data for most common inpatient and outpatient hospital procedures
  14. 14. BLUE BUTTON Patients can now view, download and transmit their health data Growing ecosystem of patient facing applications and tools New opportunities available

  16. 16. NEW OPPORTUNITIES IN 2014 New datasets from CMS Pilot external data enclave, containing claims and clinical data from many sources • Allows users to access multiple types of data; including patient claims and provider data • Means less waiting and more timely access to data
