Tips to Improve Public Speaking
Here are some important public speaking tips to help you develop your skills and
become far more effective as a public speaker.
Rehearse before the final take: Ensure your speech is both captivating to your
audience and is worth their time and attention. Videotape your presentation
and analyze it. Emphasize your strong points during your presentation.
Present the desired image to your audience: Be solemn if your topic
is serious. Appear relaxed, even if you feel nervous. Remember,
you don't look as nervous as you feel.
Establish rapport with your audience: If a microphone is available, adjust and adapt your voice accordingly.
Maintain sincere eye contact with your audience: If it is obvious that your prepared content is not getting across to
your audience, change your strategy mid-stream if you are well prepared to do so. Allow yourself and your audience a
little time to reflect and think. Check out the location ahead of time to ensure seating arrangements for audience,
whiteboard, blackboard, lighting, location of projection screen, sound system, etc. are suitable for your presentation.
Tell audience ahead of time that you will be giving out an outline of your presentation so that they will not waste time
taking unnecessary notes during your presentation.
Humour: Tell a joke if you're good at telling jokes. If you aren't good, it is best to leave the jokes behind. There's
nothing worse than a punch line that has no punch.
Tell stories: Stories make you a real person and not just a deliverer of information. Use personal experiences to bring
your material to life. No matter how dry your material is, you can always find a way to humanize it. Keep the audience
interested throughout your entire presentation. Remember that an interesting speech makes time fly, but a boring
speech is always too long to endure even if the presentation time is the same.
Using Public Speaking Environment: Try not to get stuck at one place. Use all the space that's available to you. If your
space is confined (say in a meeting room or while presenting at a table), use stronger body language to convey your
message.

Mistakes: Mistakes are all right. Recovering from mistakes makes you appear more human. Good recovery puts your
audience at ease – they identify with you more.

2. Pride of India
Kisan Baburao Hazare (born 15th January, 1940), popularly known as Anna
Hazare, is one of India's well-acclaimed social activists. A former soldier in the
Indian army, Anna is well known and respected for upgrading the ecology and
economy of the village of Ralegan Siddhi, which is located in the drought prone
Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra state. The erstwhile barren village has
metamorphosed into a unique model of rural development due to its effective
water conservation methods, which made the villagers self-sufficient. Earlier,
the same village witnessed alcoholism, utter poverty and migration to urban
slums. Inspired by Hazare’s unique approach of salvaging a hopeless village, the
state government has implemented the `Model Village’ scheme as part of its
official strategy. Hazare is now synonymous with rural development in India.

Anna Hazare- A Man behind RTI revolution
Anna Hazare started his career in the Indian Army as a driver in 1963. He spent his spare time reading the works of
Vivekananda, Gandhi, and Vinoba Bhave; they inspired him to become a social worker and activist. During the Indo-
Pakistani War of 1965, he was the only survivor in an exchange of border fire while driving a truck in Khem Karan sector.
During the mid-1970s, he survived a road accident while driving.
In 1991, Hazare launched the Bhrashtachar Virodhi Jan Aandolan (BVJA) (People's Movement against Corruption), a
popular movement to fight against corruption in Ralegaon Siddhi. In the same year, he protested against the collusion
between 40 forest officials and timber merchants. This protest resulted in the transfer and suspension of these
officials.
In May 1997, Hazare protested against alleged malpractices in the purchase of powerlooms by the Vasantrao Naik
Bhathya Vimukt Jamati Vikas Manch and the Mahatma Phule Magasvargiya Vikas Mandal.
In the early 2000s, Hazare led a movement in Maharashtra state which forced the state government to pass a stronger
Maharashtra Right to Information Act. This Act was later considered as the base document for the Right to
Information Act 2005 (RTI), enacted by the Union Government.
On 5th April 2011, Hazare initiated a movement for passing a stronger anti-corruption Lokpal bill in the Indian
Parliament. Hazare began a fast unto death on 5th April 2011 at Jantar Mantar in Delhi to press for the demand to form
a joint committee of the representatives of the Government and the civil society to draft a new bill with stronger penal
actions and more independence to the Lokpal and Lokayuktas.

2008 – On 15th April 2008 Hazare received the World Bank's 2008 Jit Gill Memorial Award for

3. 5 Tips to Speak English Confidently
1. Don't try to mug up grammar rules
This rule might sound strange to many of you, but it is one of the most important rules. Studying grammar will only slow you down and
confuse you. You will think about the rules while creating sentences instead of naturally saying a sentence like a native. Remember that
only a small fraction of English speakers know more than 20% of all the grammar rules. Many students know more grammar than native
speakers. Those who speak English fluently sometimes don't even know the rules. Fluency comes with practice.
Do you want to be able to recite the definition of a causative verb, or do you want to be able to speak English fluently?
2. Learn and study phrases, never learn single words
Many students learn vocabulary and try to put many words together to create a proper sentence. It is amazing, if you know 1000 words,
you might not be able to say one correct sentence. But if you know 1 phrase, you can make hundreds of correct sentences. If you know
100 phrases, you will be surprised at how many correct sentences you will be able to say. Finally, when you know only a 1000 phrases, you
will be almost a fluent English speaker.
So don't spend hours and hours learning many different words. Use that time to study phrases instead and you will be closer to English
fluency.
Don't translate : When you want to create an English sentence, do not translate the words from your Mother tongue. The order of
words is probably completely different and you will be both slow and incorrect by doing this. Instead, learn phrases and sentences so you
don't have to think about the words you are saying. It should be automatic.
3. Reading and Listening is not enough. Practice speaking what you hear!
Reading, listening, and speaking are the most important aspects of any language. The same is true for English. The natural order is
listening, speaking, reading, and then writing.
When you learn a second language, you need to read material to understand and learn it. So even though the natural order is listening,
speaking, reading, then writing, the order for students is reading, listening, speaking, and then writing.
The reason many people can read and listen is because that's all they practice. But, in order to speak English fluently, you need to
practice speaking. Don't stop at the listening portion, and when you study, don't just listen. Speak out loud the material you are listening
to and practice what you hear. Practice speaking out loud until your mouth and brain can do it without any effort. By doing so, you will be
able to speak English fluently.
4. Submerge yourself
Being able to speak a language is not related to how smart you are. Anyone can learn how to speak any language.
You don't have to go anywhere to become a fluent English speaker. You only need to surround yourself with English. You can do this by
making rules with your existing friends that you will only speak English. You can also carry around an iPod and constantly listen to English
sentences. As you can see, you can achieve results by changing what your surroundings are. Submerge yourself in English and you will
learn several times faster.
5. Study correct material
A common phrase that is incorrect is, "Practice makes perfect." This is far from the truth. Practice only makes what you are practicing
permanent. If you practice the incorrect sentence, you will have perfected saying the sentence incorrectly. Therefore, it is important
that you study material that is commonly used by most people.
Another problem is that many students study news. However, the language they speak is more formal and the content they use is more
political and not used in regular life. It is important to understand what they are saying, but this is more of an advanced lesson that
should be studied after learning the fundamental basics of English.
Don’t be nervous when you make mistakes. Human error is far from being a new concept — nobody is perfect! It is normal for everyone to
make mistakes. Just calm down and keep speaking bravely.
Try and try again! This may be difficult for a shy person at first, but you need to force yourself to speak, and not seclude your thoughts.
If you have some ideas, then try to speak out! Don’t just keep them in your head.

4. 8 Secrets of Self Confidence
People who suffer from low self confidence always take back seat. They hang back, afraid to make
mistakes and take risks that may just give them their big break and lead to their greatest happiness.
If you lack self confidence, you can miss out on a lot of things.
Luckily, you can train your self confidence so that it increases, and feeling confident becomes a
regular state of affairs for you.
1. Do not allow yourself to feel inferior: Fight against the urge to believe that the others around
you are simply better than you. They are not. Everyone has his/her own strengths and weaknesses.
2. Nobody is perfect: No matter how confident a person seems, nobody is perfect. In fact,
imperfections are the one that make us unique. Stop focusing on perfection and instead learn to love
yourself for your mistakes.
3. Celebrate your successes: No matter who you are, there is something that you are good at. Take
the time to find the things that you enjoy and are good at doing and then do them. If you have a green
thumb, grow a garden and allow yourself to enjoy it. If you have a way with words, write poems or
cards for the people you love and don’t be afraid to give them out. This is a great opportunity to
explore new interest and activities.
4. Always be greateful: Never forget to be thankful for what you have. Taking a moment during the
day to consciously think of the things in your life you are thankful for is important.
5. Don’t be negative: Self pity just makes things worse. When you are feeling negative, make an
effort to think positively. Hating yourself or your life is self defeating.
If you find yourself thinking negative about your job, take a few minutes to think of three positive
things about it. Do this every time you have a negative thought.
You may be surprised at how quickly you become a positive person and thinker.
6. Be gracious when you’re complimented: Recognize that when people give you a compliment, they
mean it, so be gracious and accept the compliment.
7. Smile: The physical act of smiling can actually make you feel better, so smile a lot. Smile at
yourself, smile at others and smile at nothing in particular. It is a great way to feel better.
8. Until you feel it, fake it: Just as the act of smiling makes you feel better, so too acting
confident and happy helps you be happy and confident. Make an effort to be the happy and confident
person you always wanted to be.
Becoming a happy and confident person is possible, no matter how much confidence you lack. Take
time to follow a few simple tips for training your self confidence and you will be surprised at the
change in your self confidence level.
Take a step ahead. Follow these few simple steps and welcome self confidence to your life. The
changes will be noticeable and pleasant.

“It is almost a year now... I am looking for a change.", "I will be shifting soon."- These are few of the
most common statements by those who are into jobs. They are dissatisfied with their present job,
because they no longer find it 'challenging'. Comparing themselves with the friend's eye-popping
fat salaries stimulates them to make way to higher levels in the management hierarchy. "If I have
the competence, why should I not move forward "- is the attitude among young generation.
Changing jobs in quick succession seems to be the new mantra for climbing up the corporate ladder.
But, is job hopping for career advancement a mere illusion or does it really pay...? This is a million-
dollar question which needs to be answered before you take any decision.
No doubt job hopping has become the latest trend today but you cannot jump from one job to
another as and when it strikes your imagination. "Look before you leap" is an age old proverb which
still holds true value. A thorough study of the work environment, colleagues and the company
culture along with long term career prospects would enable you to plan and decide your step further.
Never go for short term benefits; rather, look for the benefits as a whole package.
Coming to your resume- too many jobs in a year or 2 years time can portray you as a chronic job
hopper. Employers view you as a dysfunctional-restless, lacking in loyalty, trust and self-motivation.
Reflection of quick moves in your resume can raise questions on one's staying capacity, ability to
withstand challenges as well as accept accountability. Changing too many jobs may also be perceived
as your inability to get along with colleagues and employers. A short stay at a particular job also
hampers acquiring sufficient experience and skills.
Senior level executives also need to build trust and confidence which comes with years of working
together. This enables you to understand that you can reply on each other and get the support
needed to do the job well. Staying on in the job enables you to build relationships thereby making
you efficient and effective. This further strengthens your position as an invaluable member of the
organization. It is your skill with which you respond to your environment and the situations thereby
making your current pasture green.
So, if you want to boost your income fast, utilize your stay in the present organization, develop your
abilities to the fullest and learn as much as you can. This would equip you better to look for a
“greener pasture”. However, one thing is for sure you can turn the current pasture green with the
right kind of attitude and determination.
