  • Weekly Digest, August 15- 21st 2011 Job after 12th! Why not??By: Raghav Sharma. The word ‘retailing’ is derived from French word ‘retailer’ meaning to “cut a piece of” or ‘break the bulk”. Retail simply means the selling relationship between the seller and the buyer. Retail isselling and purchasing of goods of daily use, which ranges from clothing to products likesoaps and shampoos. Retail is one of the industries which are open for young studentswith skills and talents. You don’t need MBA or PhD to work in retail sector. You canstart to work even after your class 12th. The Retail Industry in India is the largest amongall the industries, accounting for over 10 per cent of the country GDP and around 8 percent of the employment. The Retail Industry in India has come forth as one of the mostdynamic and fast paced industries with several players entering the market. But all ofthem have not yet tasted success because of the heavy initial investments that are requiredto break even with other companies and compete with them. The India Retail Industry isgradually inching its way towards becoming the next boom industry. The total conceptand idea of shopping has undergone an attention drawing change in terms of format andconsumer buying behavior, ushering in a revolution in shopping in India. Modernretailing has entered into the Retail market in India as is observed in the form of bustlingshopping centers, multi-storied malls and the huge complexes that offer shopping, entertainment and food all under one roof. A large young working population withmedian age of 24 years, nuclear families in urban areas, along with increasing workingwomen population and emerging opportunities in the services sector are going to be thekey factors in the growth of the organized Retail sector in India. The growth pattern inorganized retailing and in the consumption made by the Indian population will follow arising graph helping the newer businessmen to enter the India Retail Industry. In India thevast middle class and its almost untapped retail industry are the key attractive forces forglobal retail giants wanting to enter into newer markets, which in turn will help the IndiaRetail Industry to grow faster. Indian retail is expected to grow 25 per cent annually.Modern retail in India could be worth US$ 175-200 billion by 2016. The Food RetailIndustry in India dominates the shopping basket. We all have some dreams and certain ambitionsregarding how we want to see ourselves at different junctures of life. Career planning isvery crucial in fulfilling those sweet dreams. So while you embark on your career path, itis essential to sit alone for a while and figure about specifics of your dream. You will alsoneed to devise proper plans to turn your dreams into reality. While you try to figure outthese things you will come across the term ‘career planning’. It is a painstaking processand subject to variables like changing circumstances, education and other matters yetthere has to be a vision. The planning will include your short-term and long term goalsand what are required steps to accomplish them. While you start to plan things ahead, first you need to do self assessment. It will include skills mastered by you or needed to be
  • acquired to achieve what you are set out for. There are whole lots of things to considerand it cannot work on impulse or predictability. You need to be honest with yourself andask some questions like what you enjoy the most. You like outdoor or indoor activities?Do you feel comfortable with computer or prefer more of physical activity. These are justsome of the questions. Once you have sorted out these things you will need to check thejob market. You should also give adequate consideration to level of training requiredalong with expected income. A career counselor can only offer that much. Selecting your career isin your hand however, career counselor can guide you and help you. Don’t choose yourcareer based on what your classmates are going for or what is popular in the job market. Ask yourself and you will get all the answers!http://www.careercounselling.co.in/ Are Soft skills important for your performance ?Soft skills refer to the personality traits, friendliness, social graces, and facility withlanguage, personal habits and optimism that mark people to varying degrees. Soft skillsare needed for everyday life as much as they are needed on work. One individual may notpossess all the soft skills such as interpersonal, informative, convincing and negotiation, communication and socializing skills. Some of them are important and applicable to mostpeople such as written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills like empathy, good manners and listening skills. Different roles demand different set of soft skills. Itmay take years together for a person to develop a set of soft skills to handle a range ofchallenges successfully that are encountered in life. For instance, a student must needgood listening skills, a willingness to learn, commitment and discipline. It is notuncommon for students with lower ranks in EAMCET to score higher percentagesbecause of good soft skills. In an information technology company, if a person isappointed as a team leader in case there is a team of people with similar IQ and technical
  • skills, then the team leader is the person who shares information properly with his fellowemployees about the assignments and coordinate with them in completing the given workin a stipulated time. In the same way, it is applicable in a tech support company also.Let’s say there is a team of 10 people with same technical knowledge. A person who isgood in handling the customer complaints and solving the disputes would outrank hiscolleagues in terms of his performance, because of his soft skills and not hard skills. Mostof this competence comes from his well developed soft skills. This person stands headand toe over the rest of the team members, when his performance is compared withothers. Similarly, it is widely applicable in every type of job in any industry withdifferent set of soft skills requiring for different job roles. Lastly soft skills are not talent. Many talents are natural. A person who has talent may not be aware of it. It tookChanakya to discover the talent of Chandragupta Maurya. Also, it took Imran Khan todiscover the talent of Wasim Akram. A person with talent would still need a good teacherand systematic practice to develop it. However, a person without the talent will gonowhere even with the same teacher and systematic practice or training. This is not thecase with the soft skills, which are mostly teachable and learn-able by applying ourselvescorrectly. That means anyone can learn soft skills. No qualification is required forlearning soft skills. However, based on the career aspirations the set of soft skills willvary from person to person.https://www.management-guru.com/
