  • 1. With advancement in technology, the world has shrunk into a global village. In thisfast changing economic scenario one often wonders if technical/ job related skills areenough to climb the corporate ladder? Technical/job related skills are a primaryrequirement in any organization but are not adequate when it comes to climbing upthe corporate ladder. The conventional paternalism style of leadership has become obsolete, in thatprofessional managers expect their teams to be proactive and communicate openly.Soft skills are very important in business where one needs to have the ability to conveythe idea to the masses in the simplest possible manner. Planning is necessary butimplementation is also equally essential, and it takes soft skills to execute any idea asit involves dealing with people directly.Training experts say that there are many soft skills that are required to tackle varioussituations. Some of them include:1. Interpersonal skills 2. Team spirit 3. Social grace4. Business etiquette 5. Negotiation skills6. Behavioral traits such as attitude, motivation and time managementIf one already has these skills then it is a time tocheer, but if not then it is about time for one toacquire them. Training in soft skills is relevant in acountry like India where the education system doesnot emphasize on personality development.
  • 2. In a large business set up where several people with similar technical expertise are in competitionwith each other for a promotion, it is the overall personality which ultimately plays a vital role forones growth within the organization. Some inputs from experts on soft skills to self initiate the process would include, asking ones familymembers or close friends to pin point and analyze ones, best and worst traits. It would be ideal tohave at least four or five people to do this exercise. Having done that, one must evaluate the commontraits mentioned by all of them to enable you to be aware of your strengths and work towardsimprovement of your weaknesses.Secondly, it is important to be a part of team activities and a team player. Observe your own behaviorin the group and how you relate to others. Build an understanding with your teammates, interactmore with them. Take up projects and get involved in some voluntary work. Learn to trust, buildcomradeship, set common goals, and provide support to colleagues. Some other points would include being optimistic, radiate positivism and spread the infectiousoptimism. Be self motivating by setting personal goals to reach new highs and keep targets foryourself. Possess a forgiving and benevolent ego. Learn to be humble, accept and learn sincerelyfrom criticism.Communicate effectively:Be clear, tactful, and diplomatic and pace the conversation. Think out of box. Be creative and honeyour innovative and creative skills.Look at the Big Picture:Consider all aspects, potential opportunities, threats and contingenciesLearn how to multitask and prioritize:How well do you manage your time? Think. Can you do more in life? Or is your day too crammedwith activities? Effective time management is very essential in the corporate world. Practiceempowerment and delegation, mange time well when multitasking and prioritizing.Introspect on how you react to feedback:In organizations, people skills mostly come into the picture when there is feedback given -- be it foran idea, an executed project or a presentation. You are judged by the way you respond to feedback.Do you get defensive? Do you insist you were right? Do you meekly accept criticism? Remember, people tend to be judged and stereotyped according to their responses. How good are you at critiquing? While responding to feedback is one side of the coin, giving feedback is the other side. Are youaggressive? Pessimistic? Do you believe in constructive criticism? Or prefer to be the yes-man?Live consciously:Any organization is run by people; therefore soft skills are all abouthow you deal with people and present yourself. Though it may be easiersaid than done, soft skills can be enhanced simply by being aware of oneselfand living consciously.“Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken bird that cannot fly” Ms. PRATIBHA MAITRA (Business Partner, Baroda)
