3. 4. Prologue, 2 Peter 1:12-15

“ I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have. I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body, because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things ”

 4. 5. Learn Humbly:

Learn from Your Losses

Surrender to God’s Strength

Pursue God’s Path

 5. 6. Learn from Your Losses

Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter).

~ John 1:40-42

 6. 7. Learn from Your Losses

As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him..

~ Mark 1:16-18

 7. 8. Learn from Your Losses

Jesus got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore..

..When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

~ Luke 5:1-11

 8. 9. Learn from Your Losses

Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: Simon (whom he named Peter) , his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

~ Luke 6:12-16

 9. 10. Learn from Your Losses

Jesus did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.. After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”). Immediately the girl stood up.

~ Mark 5:35-43

 10. 11. Learn from Your Losses

Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him, they were terrified. But Jesus said: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “ You of little faith, why did you doubt? ”

~ Matthew 14:25-31

 11. 12. Learn from Your Losses

Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied, “Blessed are you.. I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church” From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things.. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!” Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me”

~ Matthew 16:13-23

 12. 13. Learn from Your Losses

About eight days after this, he took Peter , John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure , which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem..

..Jesus said to his disciples, “ Listen carefully: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men .” But they did not understand

~ Luke 9:28-45

 13. 14. Learn from Your Losses

They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished. Again he took the Twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him. “ We are going up to Jerusalem, ” he said, “ and the Son of Man will be delivered over. They will condemn him to death. Three days later he will rise ”..

~ Mark 10:32-34

 14. 15. Learn from Your Losses

As they approached Jerusalem.. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,

“ Hosanna!”

“ Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”

“ Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

~ Mark 11:1-10

 15. 16. Learn from Your Losses
 16. 17. Surrender to God’s Strength

“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

But Peter replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”

Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”

~Luke 22:31-34

 17. 18. Surrender to God’s Strength

Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him , and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” Then he returned and found them sleeping . “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter . “ Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak .”

~Matthew 26:36-41

 18. 19. Surrender to God’s Strength

While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and Judas was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him.. Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance .. And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them . A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.” But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.

~Luke 22:54-57

 19. 20. Surrender to God’s Strength

A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” “Man, I am not!” Peter replied. About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.” Peter replied, “Man, #@$! I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.

~Luke 22:58-62

The Lord turned and look ed straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.

~Luke 22:58-62

 21. 22. 2 Corinthians 7:10

“ Godly sorrow

brings repentance

that leads to salvation

and leaves no regret,

but worldly sorrow

brings death”

 23. 24. Surrender to God’s Strength

“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers .”

But Peter replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”

Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”

~Luke 22:31-34

 24. 25. Surrender to God’s Strength

Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, the women were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?” But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter , ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’”

~Mark 16:2-7

 25. 26. Pursue God’s Path

When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me ?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “ Do you love me ?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep”.. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”

~John 21:15-19

 26. 27. Pursue God’s Path

Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”) When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”

Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me .”

~John 21:20-22

 27. 28. Pursue God’s Path

“ For God, who was at work in Peter as an apostle to the circumcised, was also at work in me as an apostle to the Gentiles. James, Cephas and John, those esteemed as pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcised. When Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned . For before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group.” ~Paul (Gal.1:8-12)

 28. 29. Pursue God’s Path

“… our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him . He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.”

~Peter (2 Peter 3:16)

 29. 30. Epilogue, 2 Peter 1:12-15

 30. 31. The Next Steps

I will take stock of my life and learn what God were trying to teach me

I will rely on God’s strength, discipline my body so I can act on the Spirit

I will make every effort so that after my departure people will remember the Gospel
