1- Introduction
HotPotatoes is a suite of tools for the creation of
interactive, web-based (or stand-alone) tests. The
software produces small HTML and JavaScript
based test modules that can be opened in any
browser without additional plugins.
Generally these are self tests for individual
assessment of learners, without recording the test results.

1- Introduction
The HotPotatoes test set consists of six different programs. Five are the so
called basic test tools and one tool, the Masher, combines the different tests to a
test series or test unit.
HotPotatoes was developed by a team at the University of Victoria, B.C.,
Canada, and is now available in version six. It has been available for several years
and is well established especially in academia and in schools.
About Author: Katrin Tanck, the author of this module, has been working in
the field of eLearning with common sense | eLearning and training consultants since
the year 2000. She develops course concepts and course content, creates
online tests, acts as an online tutor and is responsible for quality control.

HotPotatoes consists of five different basic
programs, each of which generates a different type of
learning task.
Each test type saves the program files with a different file
extension. The output format of the tests is always HTML.

The following Tools shows an overview of the five HotPotatoes
programs and their most important characteristics.
JQuiz
Test Type: Quiz questions
Description: Generates question-based quizzes such as
multiple choice, short answer etc.
JCloze
Test Type: gap fills
Description: Creates gap fills with an unlimited number of
correct answers

JCross
Test Type: Crossword
Description: Produces crossword puzzles that can be solve online.
JMix
Test Type: Sequencing tasks
Description: Creates tasks that let the learners find the right order
of a sequence.

JMatch
Test Type: Matching exercise
Description: Creates tests where the learner has to
match pairs.
Masher
It's used to combine learning tasks.
NOTE (No license three files are allowed to build.)

There are important three ways to export file from Hot
Potatoes Software:
- Create web page
- Create Zip Package
- Create SCORM Package

3.2- Import:
This section we want to show you how to import files from Hot
Potatoes Software to each course in Moodle.
(Make sure you are administrator or teacher of a course)
Three easy steps below:
Step 1: Access into a course first
Step 2: Add an activities (Hot Potatoes Quizz)
Step 3: Choose the right Hot Potatoes Quizz
that you had exported from Hot Potatoes software.

4- Term of use & recommendation
4.1- Terms of use:
Under certain conditions, the use of HotPotatoes may be free
– however, HotPotatoes is no freeware.
A registration is required to use all functions of
HotPotatoes. If you don’t register, the number of possible questions
and answers in your tests will be restricted.
The use of HotPotatoes is free for individual use and the use
in educational institutions if the tests are available on a publicly
accessible server and offered free of charge.

4- Term of use & recommendation
4.2- Recommendation:
Finally, i recommend all of you, please register for license of
Hot Potatoes Software because we need to access all
features in it.
If you don't register for a license you will have a trouble with
this (Example: please look at slide number 8)
