FRAPS: from the Machinima Weekend Sessions - Presentation Transcript

  1. FRAPS
    • FRAPS (named for frames per second ) can be used on DirectX and OpenGL games. It records at extremely high frame rates (higher than video). FRAPS works with Second Life.

    • FRAPS: version 1.9d = FREE
    • (films 30 second clips with watermark, no audio)

  3. Preferences: General
    • Start FRAPS minimized
    • Run FRAPS minimized
    FRAPS window on top. 3

    • This is not
    • necessary
    • for Second Life.

    • Half-size, full-size, cursor? Record sound? Free versions record for 30 seconds max.
    Set folder to save movies: Set sound input Note the video capture Hotkey: F9 5

    • Set location for saving the screenshots, Hotkey=F10
    Image format? bmp, jpg, png, TGA 6

    • The frame counter turns RED when you are recording video.

    • Press F9 to stop recording
    • Video is saved to the pre-set location

    • This is not video editing software
    • It is used to compress large files but not to for reducing resolution of movie for the web (e.g. 320x240 - preferred by YouTube)

    • (online or on your computer) Windows Media Player, iMovie, Adobe Premiere, Vegas, Final Cut Pro, etc.

    We use Jumpcut 11
  12. Streaming Machinima & Video to Second Life
    • Only Quicktime video plays in SL.
    • The FRAPS AVI file can be converted to Quicktime in a video editor
    • Save as a “fast start” movie which is optimized for streaming (instead of downloading)
    • Post to a server supporting streaming or a site like Blip.tv which allows you to retain the original format; for Quicktime you can use the file to stream into SL.

  13. SL Camera Tips zoom in, pan, orbit…
    • Alt-Zoom: Press the alt key & left mouse button to alt-zoom on your subject
    • PAN your camera:
    • Hold down Ctrl-alt-shift
    • Go into ORBIT MODE
    • Hold down the ALT and CTRL keys
    • & left drag your mouse on your own or another avatar.

  14. Important Check out Debug Menu & change your preferences
    • Open the Debug Menu: Ctrl - alt - d
    • Press Ctrl-Alt-D on PC or Opt-Ctrl-D on Mac .
      • Opens the Client (used to be called ‘debug’) and Server menus - includes many useful options (Joystick Flycam), high res still shots, quiet snapshots to disk, stop typing animation
      • Toggle to open and close menus: using ctrl-alt-d
    • Open Preferences: Decrease your Draw Distance
      • Lower is easier on your computer (range is 64 - 512)
    • Set draw distance to: 128 or lower
    • Increase Draw Distance only if you want to take:
      • overhead shots of landscape
      • or
      • see distant objects.

  15. SL Preferences Before we start… Clear up the Screen -->
    • Red Arrow / Beam:
      • Click on map button or View | World Map
      • Click on CLEAR button (right side of screen)
    • Chat Bubbles:
      • Click on Edit | Preferences | General Tab
      • Under Show Names: click Never
    • Mouse Sensitivity:
      • Click on Edit | Preferences | Input & Camera
      • Increase mouse sensitivity
      • (choose what works for you)

  16. Change Preferences for Using Mouselook Shortcut M
    • Close Chat text entry field:
      • Edit | Preferences
      • Under Chat tab: select checkbox
      • ‘ Close chat after hitting return’
    • When filming this will allow you to use the shortcut for Mouselook : M
    • (otherwise, use View | Mouselook)
    • Use ESCAPE key to get out of Mouselook

  17. PC or Mac Shortcuts: Get rid of the UI
    • Depending on your movie, you may want to get rid of the SL viewer interface (menu bar, buttons, camera controls, etc.). To do this, use the following toggle; turn on and off using these shortcut keys.
    • PCs Only:
      • HIDE / Show Interface: CTRL - ALT - F1
    • MACS Only:
    • Hide / Show Interface: CMD - Option -F1
