How effective is the combination of main product and the digipak and poster?
I am going to attempt to answer this question by looking at how effectively the products combine to create a ‘star image’ for our artists.
The star image of the artist is a key element in how they are sold to the target audience: young women who are interested in cute, attractive and talented men. There is also a blonde, attractive girl, that would attract men. The band are a young and talented. And there is a element of creativity.
Richard Dyer, a professor of Film Studies at King’s College and previously at University of Warwick, theorised the idea of ‘Stars and Stardom’.
The term ‘Star’ is constructed around a music artist, to sell the performer to a large and devoted audience.
Dyer studied the idea that there are values to make a performer have that stardom statues, for example: youthfulness, rebellion, sexual magnetism, aggression ect.
He believes that with these values a performer can become a ‘star’. The idea that they become a star indicates that they are an image, not a real person. They are produced as a commodity to make money and be successful.
The band we produced only have a few values that would make them stars, youthfulness , sexual magnetism , creativity and talent . Our band does have the core values that would attract a large audience.
The music we chose is all about love, and therefore would attract to people that like loved up, happy songs. Therefore the values that don’t work are aggression, a disregard for social values relating to drugs, sex and polite behaviour, conspicuous consumption of sex, drugs and material goods and success against the odds.
Our band has a very young and naive look. All three of our band members look and dress quite young.
We intentionally picked a young looking band and the clothes are quite simple.
The lighting isn't stereotypically ‘manly’, the pink lights and pink hearts reflect a young image among the band.
This would market a young audience, especially girls but also would attract teenagers.
Our lead singer Jack, has a cute, young looking face and young girls would definitely be attracted to him.
The image of him in just track suit bottoms and no top, create a sexual look of him, and this would market more to the teenagers and older.
The song is also about the main singer having a one night stand and falling in love, so having an attractive male fits perfect.
The animation in our video reflects the creativity in our video.
There are four different animation parts to the video, the toast which moves onto the plate. The bacon which starts of uncooked and goes to cooked. The main singer, Jack drops three oranges into a glass and he bangs the glass and it turns into juice, and the fourth is the eggs, which are pictured below. The egg moves across the worktop and the face turns from happy to sad.
The animation adds a different element to the video, and this includes creativity too.
Due to our band having a young image could show that they are talented. Three young musicians which have ‘star’ qualities reflect that they are talented.
In Dyer’s theory our band have the ‘star’ quality to be sucsessful.
