Plot: Jessup was in prison for cooking crank. Ree was taking care of her mother and brothers. One day a Sherriff came by and informed the family that Jessup made bond by signing over the house and land. He said if Jessup doesn’t show for his court hearing, the family would have to move. Jessup’s family had a long line of crank cookers, fighters, lawbreakers, and unsupportive relatives. The rich neighbors brought food and wood to them when they had extra. Strong-headed Ree was determined to find her father to make him appear in court, not to lose their home.
Plot cont. Ree started at her uncle’s house, her father’s older brother, about 3 miles away. He did not know where her father was. He told her it was none of her business where he was and his decision to go to court or not. He gave her some money and told her to leave. When she left her uncle’s house she went to her best friend’s house to see if she could borrow her husband’s truck. When he said no, she left and headed back home. Once home she cleaned up her mother and brothers, cooked dinner, and reminisced about when her mother was happy.
