Tongues: what’s happening? <ul><li>You are the one speaking </li></ul><ul><li>And they were all filled with the </li></ul><ul><li>Holy Ghost, and began to speak </li></ul><ul><li>with other tongues, as the Spirit </li></ul><ul><li>gave them utterance. </li></ul><ul><li>(Acts 2:4) </li></ul>

The gift of tongues – 1 Cor. 12:27-30 </li></ul><ul><li>Now you are the body of Christ, and </li></ul><ul><li>members in particular.  And God has </li></ul><ul><li>set some in the church, first apostles, </li></ul><ul><li>secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, </li></ul><ul><li>after that miracles… </li></ul>

The gift of tongues <ul><li>… then gifts of healings, helps, </li></ul><ul><li>governments, diversities of </li></ul><ul><li>tongues.  Are all apostles?  Are all </li></ul><ul><li>prophets? Are all teachers?  Are all </li></ul><ul><li>workers of miracles?  Do all have the </li></ul><ul><li>gifts of healing?  Do all speak with </li></ul><ul><li>tongues?  Do all interpret? </li></ul>
  17. 17. 3. The gift of tongues <ul><li>As used personally </li></ul><ul><li>(a “prayer language”) </li></ul><ul><li>He that speaks in a tongue </li></ul><ul><li>edifies himself … </li></ul><ul><li>(1 Cor. 14:4) </li></ul>
  18. 18. 3. The gift of tongues <ul><li>As used personally </li></ul><ul><li>(a “prayer language”) </li></ul><ul><li>I thank my God, </li></ul><ul><li>I speak with tongues more than you all, </li></ul><ul><li>yet in the church… </li></ul><ul><li>(1 Cor. 14:18-19) </li></ul>

The gift of tongues <ul><li>As used personally </li></ul><ul><li>(a “prayer language”) </li></ul><ul><li>But if there is no interpreter, let him </li></ul><ul><li>keep silence in the church; and let him </li></ul><ul><li>speak to himself, and to God. </li></ul><ul><li>(1 Cor. 14:28) </li></ul>

To edify ourselves and pray <ul><li>Praying with groanings, etc. </li></ul><ul><li>Likewise the Spirit also helps our </li></ul><ul><li>infirmities; for we do not know what we </li></ul><ul><li>should pray for as we ought; </li></ul><ul><li>but the Spirit himself makes </li></ul><ul><li>intercession for us… </li></ul>

To edify ourselves and pray <ul><li>Praying with groanings, etc. </li></ul><ul><li>… with groanings which cannot be </li></ul><ul><li>uttered.  And he who searches the </li></ul><ul><li>hearts knows what is the mind of the </li></ul><ul><li>Spirit, because he makes intercession </li></ul><ul><li>for the saints according to God.   </li></ul>

To edify ourselves and pray <ul><li>Praying with groanings, etc. </li></ul><ul><li>And we know that all things work </li></ul><ul><li>together for good to those who love </li></ul><ul><li>God, to those who are the called </li></ul><ul><li>[ones] according to his purpose. </li></ul><ul><li>(Rom. 8:26-28) </li></ul><ul><li>  </li></ul>
  23. 23. 4. To edify ourselves and pray <ul><li>Praying with groanings, etc. </li></ul><ul><li>- not how to pray but what to pray </li></ul><ul><li>- praying according to God </li></ul><ul><li>- avoiding soulish praying   </li></ul>
  24. 24. 4. To edify ourselves and pray <ul><li>Communing with God </li></ul><ul><li>All the forms within 1 Cor. 14: </li></ul><ul><li>- praise, worship </li></ul><ul><li>- thanksgiving </li></ul><ul><li>(all whether sung or spoken) </li></ul>
  25. 25. 4. To edify ourselves and pray <ul><li>Edification of your spirit man - </li></ul><ul><li>1 Cor. 14:4, 18 </li></ul><ul><li>He that speaks in a tongue </li></ul><ul><li>edifies himself… </li></ul><ul><li>I thank my God, I speak with </li></ul><ul><li>tongues more than you all… </li></ul>

To edify ourselves and pray <ul><li>Edification - Jude 20 </li></ul><ul><li>But you, beloved, building yourselves </li></ul><ul><li>up on your most holy faith, praying in </li></ul><ul><li>the Holy Ghost, keep yourselves in the </li></ul><ul><li>love of God, looking for the mercy of </li></ul><ul><li>our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.  </li></ul>
  27. 27. 4. To edify ourselves and pray <ul><li>The release of the Spirit (John 7:38): </li></ul><ul><li>If any man thirsts, let him come to me, </li></ul><ul><li>and drink. He who believes on me, as </li></ul><ul><li>the scripture has said, out of his belly </li></ul><ul><li>shall flow rivers of living water. </li></ul><ul><li>But He spoke this of the Spirit… </li></ul>

What Paul knew way back when <ul><li>“… their frontal lobes — the thinking, </li></ul><ul><li>willful part of the brain through </li></ul><ul><li>which people control what they </li></ul><ul><li>do — were relatively quiet, as were </li></ul><ul><li>the language centers. The regions </li></ul><ul><li>involved in maintaining </li></ul><ul><li>self-consciousness were active….” </li></ul>
