    • Each state created own government
    • Republics: people elect reps. to govern on their behalf
  • Articles of Confederation
    • A document that created the 1 st government of the newly independent United States
    • 1 st U.S. constitution (1781-87)
    • Written by John Dickinson
    • Created a “ Firm league of friendship” b/w the states
  • Strengths of the AOC
  • General Successes
    • Governed America during Rev. War
    • Negotiated Treaty of Paris of 1783
    • Created laws that led to orderly westward expansion
  • Land Ordinance of 1785
    • Law that created a system of orderly settlement of western lands
    • One section of each township sold to fund public schools
  • Land Ordinance
  • Northwest Ordinance of 1787
    • Law that created a system of government for western lands
    • Created a procedure used to allow new states
    • Resulted in states of OH, IN, MI, MN, WI
    • Slavery prohibited in new states
  • Northwest Ordinance of 1787
  • Weaknesses of AOC
  • Fundamental Problem
    • Created a WEAK national government subject to states
    • US govt. unable to force state compliance with federal laws
    • States had all the power

    • Inefficient Congress
    • No POTUS or courts

    • Unable to control economy

    • A failed revolt of 1,500 poor MA. farmers
