    Librarians’ involvement – the story
  • 479 in patient beds, 2,500+ staff
    A major teaching hospital for UCD Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Physiotherapy.
    National Centre of Excellence for Cancer
    National Pancreatic Surgical Centre
    National Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre
    National Centre for Colorectal Disease
    SVHG - The company is a not for profit, voluntary group of hospitals, has charitable status and its shareholders are the Sisters of Charity. Funded by HSE.
    Accredited by JCI – first in 2010 and re-accrediated as an Academic Medical Centre in 2013 (first one in Europe – check!!)
  • Library established in July 1980.
    Founding librarian, Hilda Beckett, was first professional librarian appointed to an Irish hospital library. Founding member of HSLG and the library become a model for other medical libraries in the country as they were established.
    Mid 1990s – combined with nursing library from School and diagnostic imaging to become the multidisciplinary health science library it is today.
    2001 – I joined as Head of Library & Information Services. 2006 – Anne Madden took up position of Assistant Librarian. 2008 – Gerry McManus joined us as Library Assistant.

    • 10. We sit on a multidisciplinary committee • It is Group wide • Members include: Group CEO, Chief Operating Officer, Directors of Nursing, Consultants, Senior Nursing and Allied Health Staff, NCHDs etc.
    • 11. We have a VOICE on this Committee • We are equal • We read submissions and reports and are invited to make comment
    • 12. We are an integral part of the Clinical Audit Process • Two of your 5 a day thing here
    • 13. • Proposed clinical audits must have carried out a literature search (copy of form?) • Clinical Audit Co-Ordinator sends prospective auditors to us to confirm the standards/guidelines or to find them in the first place
    • 14. We found extra work for ourselves • We are able to identify audits that we can help with • We see where the clinical priorities/quality improvement priorities are for the organisation
