To effectively manage and troubleshoot these dynamic environments, IT needs to collect a broader and deeper variety of data across the environment. Managing and analyzing this massive amount of data can be tedious, time-consuming, and sometimes even impossible.

  • The challenges of big data come down to four key areas:Volume: The sheer volume of the data is flooding systems and challenging legacy database designs. In fact by 2015, the average company with >1000 employees in the industries of Securities/Investments, Banking, Communications & Media, Utilities and government will have an average of 14.6 petabytes of data1 In order to solve this challenge, you need scale. Since most of you are in IT you know what a petabyte is. For anyone who doesn’t a petabyte is let me start a little smaller. A gigabyte is 7 minutes of HD-TV video. 2 GB is 20 yards of books on a shelf. There are a million gigabytes in a petabyte. So let me sum up 14.6 Petabytes is really really big. Variety: Data needs to be sourced from almost every action your enterprise takes. The web, social media, partners, customers, acquisitions, mergers, devices on the shop floor to name few. This data comes in all kinds of formats that span structured, semi-structured and unstructured data. In fact, Gartner estimates that large companies already encounter 100,000 to 100 million business events per second that generated data2. To solve this challenge you need to be able to source your data across a wide landscape of formats. Velocity: The rate and speed of the incoming data challenges traditional database systems. For example, 1 terabyte of data can be created by an industrial machine alone , in an hour. To solve this challenge you need speed in two areas. The ability to ingest the data as well as the ability to analyze that data. Vulnerability: Studies have found that the average annualized cost of cybercrime incurred by a benchmark sample of U.S. organizations was $8.9 million. On an annual basis, information theft accounted for 44 percent of it. Which is about $4M per company. Now if you prorate that to the fortune 1000, you get a cost of $4B US. This is actually a low estimate because we are using the average. In the study we sponsored, the top annualized amount for one company was $46M. So vulnerability brings with it a stiff penalty if you are unable to protect it. So how do you overcome these challenges.
